Appreciating style with a rustic flair

I never used to get excited about rustic home decor elements, but lately, I've seen some I appreciate.

Maybe it's because these items are often reused for something beyond their original purpose, which is cool. And rustic style is beautiful on a large scale, as I found when I toured the Stewart family's log house in Tuscola last week. You can see a photo gallery featuring their home here.

I've seen several photos of rustic spaces I love on houzz.com. I especially love the one that uses industrial springs as bar stools. And, perhaps I'm not the only one coming around to rustic designs. It seems like I can't go a day without seeing antlers featured on Apartment Therapy and Design*Sponge.

I've also been enjoying tutorials on how to incorporate pieces of furniture into rustic designs. One blog reader (hi Rebecca!) e-mailed me this dresser-to-kitchen island idea, and I love this similar idea, as well. I'd like to have something like one of these when I live in a bigger house.

And, now that I think about it, my old hutch from the family farm is an important element in my dining room. So maybe I've liked rustic decorating for longer than I realize.

What about you - ever find your taste in home decor changing?
