Ramen Relief scheduled for Sunday at Black Dog in Urbana
The Black Dog Smoke and Alehouse in Urbana is hosting Sunday its second round of Ramen Relief.
The first similar event raised about $500 for tsunami victims in Japan, and this weekend's even is donating money to mercycorps.com for famine and drought relief in the Horn of Africa.
It's organized by Mark "Shades" Hartstein, who works at the Black Dog.
"Our evening's ramen special will be available after 5 p.m. Sunday ... and it will cost $12.95 with $5 being collected for the donation fund," Hartstein said. "I'll be contributing my wages and tips for the evening as well."
The Hokkaido-style ramen features a pork and miso broth, thick curly noodles, and hearty toppings such as braised pork belly, minced pork, sweetcorn and beansprouts, he said.
Jill Miller (of homemade Bloody Mary mix fame) tipped me off about this event, and said the first round had hands-down, the best ramen she's ever eaten.
