Meghan Firchau's garden planters made from repurposed concrete

The other day, Champaign resident Meghan Firchau emailed me with a garden DIY project she did with her husband's help. It's impressive, and looks every bit as good as those blocks you can buy at the home-improvement store.

Blog Photo"A couple of years ago my husband jack-hammered out our front sidewalk because it was cracked and sunken," Meghan wrote. "Rather than pay expensive dumping fees to throw away the broken concrete, I made a planter that wraps around my garage. My husband gave me pointers on digging the blocks into the ground and making them level so it looks more professional.

"It is both a flower bed and my raised fruit (and) vegetable garden. It was a good way to recycle and I didn't have to pay for expensive blocks. his will be my second year using the planter as a fruit and vegetable garden. It's well-contained, easy to reach into and a lot less muddy than our previous garden arrangement."

Meghan's repurposed concrete planters have me wondering - what other genius things are readers DIYing in their yards? If you have something you'd like to be featured here, please feel free to email me. I'd love to hear from you.
