Cleaning up our basement and hoping for a reasonable amount of rain this weekend
Earlier this week, I spoke with Bill Rose, an expert on water (well, moisture) and heat in walls, foundations and roofs, for a story about possible heavy rains because of Hurricane Isaac.
Rose, who's a senior research architect at the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center in Champaign, talked a lot about what may happen if we get 3 to 6 inches of rain this weekend. Now, the National Weather service is predicting even more rain.
To be honest, that conversation struck fear in my heart. He talked about how drought conditions followed by lots of rain can cause flooding in basements that don't usually flood (basements like ours).
So, I spent a significant amount of time picking items up off our basement floor yesterday and sweeping debris. Honestly, it was good motivation to clean a basement that hadn't been cleaned in quite some time.
We are also checking our gutters, make sure our gutter extenders are hooked up and I'm pulling out my rain boots for this first time this summer.
Are you doing anything to prepare for the possibility of tons of rain this weekend?
