Getting started making a kitchen hanger out of old rolling pins

Blog PhotoI have long admired the cute funkiness of the rolling pin towel rack DIY. However, I've always wondered how you find affordable antique rolling pins. If I spent 15 bucks on one, I most certainly would not be sawing it in half.

Enter a cheaper solution - I found two pretty nasty (and smaller-than-usual) rolling pins at The I.D.E.A. Store last Saturday. At 75 cents each, they were the perfect price. Plus, they clearly were not in good enough shape to be rolling out piecrusts. Hello, guilt-free repurposing.

So I picked them up and talked strategy with Rob - I want them to become a coat or apron rack.

He wondered if maybe we should wait for the perfect piece of wood for a base. Now, I love my husband and all the handy things he's capable of. But I also know him well enough that a phase like that will put the brakes on a project faster than you can say "weathered patina."

Blog PhotoThen I realized - what if we used the salvaged brass kickplate that won't fit on our front door as a base?

Rob liked the idea, too. So he took apart the rolling pins, and cut them in half on his table saw.

Progress is slow going around here, so I figured I'd blog about getting to the halfway point. My next plan is to make the rolling pins old using this Vintage Chippy Finish tutorial.

If that works out OK, we'll epoxy the handles to the pins, and then the whole thing to the kick plate. Hope it works! I'll keep you posted.

(Edit: Here's how it turned out.)
