First career conference honor for the senior.
Defense carried the Illinois Soccer team to a 1-0 overtime win at Michigan State on Saturday, so it's fitting that an Illini defender would get honored by the Big Ten this week. Senior Jenna Carosio, who is playing on the back line for the first time in her Illinois career this season, was named Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week by the league office today. Carosio and her back line mates Stephanie Pouse and Kassidy Brown held Michigan State to just seven shots for the game, including just one from MSU's All-American forward Laura Heyboer. Goalkeeper Steph Panozzo made three saves in the victory. Head coach Janet Rayfield was very complimentary of her defense when we spoke after Saturday's game.
Carosio shares the award with Wisconsin goalkeeper Michelle Dalton, who made eleven saves in the Badgers' win at Nebraska on Friday. The Badgers visit Champaign this Sunday in a 3pm start.
Updated Big Ten Standings:
Penn State has gained a bit of separation, as they're now four points clear of second-place Wisconsin. But the rest of the conference 2-11 is clumped tightly together, as only five points separate Wisconsin from Indiana and Nebraska, who are tied for tenth. Should be a wild finish to the Big Ten regular season.
More detailed info in my weekly Big Ten soccer blog, which should be ready on Wednesday. Thanks for reading.
