Big Ten Soccer 10/2/11

The Illini pick up a pair of home wins and move up the standings.

Sunday's scores:

Penn State 1 Minnesota 0.  Maya Hayes strikes again, with a goal in the 84th minute.  The Nittany Lions take over first place by themselves with the win and...

Iowa 1 Michigan State 0.  Iowa got a goal from Dana Dalrymple in the 8th minute, and that was enough.  Shots were 20-15 MSU, and both teams put nine shots on goal.  This may be the season Iowa makes its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

Michigan 2 Nebraska 1.  The Huskers suffer two home losses this weekend, undoing much of the good work they did on the road last week.

Ohio State 1 Wisconsin 0.  This one could have Big Ten title implications.  A big road win for the Buckeyes, who move into a tie for second place on the strength of a Tiffany Cameron goal.  The Badgers' loss takes away from their win over Penn State to start league play.

Indiana 1 Northwestern 0.  The Wildcats probably deserved a better fate today, outshooting IU 16-9.  But, Lisa Nouanesengsy's goal in the 70th minute was enough for the Hoosiers to claim the victory.

Illinois 1 Purdue 0.  Illinois outshot the Boilermakers 14-3 in a game that featured 33 fouls (24 on Purdue).  The Illini offense struggled to find its rhythm, and a Vanessa DiBernardo penalty kick was the lone goal.  Credit Marissa Mykines with drawing the foul inside the penalty box.

Be sure to listen to postgame interviews with head coach Janet Rayfield, Marissa Mykines, and especially freshman defender Stephanie Pouse.  She does a nice job of explaining the Illini's three-back system, and talks about making the adjustment to the speed of the college game.
