Illinois Soccer Moving up the Standings

Illinois Soccer Moving up the Standings

The game wasn't pretty for the Illini, but the result was beautiful against Minnesota.

The Illinois Soccer team extended its winning streak to four games, and its shutout streak to three in a row, as they defeated Minnesota 1-0 at Illinois Soccer & Track Stadium last night.  Sophomore Vanessa DiBernardo continued her clutch scoring, as for the second time in three games she contributed the lone goal of the match.  The goal came in the 19th minute off a beautiful pass from junior Niki Read, who leads the Illini with six assists this season.  Read talked with me about the goal, and about the team's collective defensive effort last night after the game.

Head coach Janet Rayfield was also pleased with the defensive performance, singling out a sliding save from midfielder Shayla Mutz in the closing minutes that stopped Minnesota's last quality scoring chance.

Next up for the Illini is Wisconsin, who comes in for the SoccerFest game tomorrow afternoon.  The Badgers had a surprising tie last night at Northwestern, which allowed the Illini to pass them for second place in the Big Ten.

Friday's scores:

Illinois 1 Minnesota 0.

Penn State 5 Nebraska 4.  The Huskers wouldn't go down without a fight, but in the end PSU had just enough firepower to get the win.

Iowa 1 Ohio State 0.  A Final Four team a season ago, the Buckeyes are in danger of not making the NCAA Tournament field with an overall record of just 8-6-1.

Wisconsin 1 Northwestern 1.  The Wildcats are showing signs of life, beating Michigan last week, and tying the Badgers last night.
