Illinois Soccer: "We're Goin' Streakin'!"

Illinois Soccer: "We're Goin' Streakin'!"

Illinois sets a school record with its eighth straight victory.

Despite being without all-Big Ten midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo, the Illinois Soccer team put an impressive cap in its regular season with a 3-2 win over Michigan tonight.  Head coach Janet Rayfield said that DiBernardo was held out for precautionary reasons after taking a hard foul against Nebraska on Sunday.  The offense did just fine without her, as Janelle Flaws and Julie Ewing each put home pretty passes from sophomore Kassidy Brown, and senior Jenna Carosio rounded out the Illinois scoring by putting home a penalty kick later in the second half.  With the victory, Illinois finishes the regular season with a 14-4-1 record overall, and an 8-2-1 mark in the Big Ten, which is good for second place.  Next up for the Illini is a rematch with Ohio State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament at Northwestern on Wednesday.  After the game, I got interviews with Julie Ewing, Jenna Carosio, Kassidy Brown and Janet Rayfield.

There's one game left on the Big Ten schedule tomorrow, as Indiana visits Ohio State, but that game will have no impact on the seeding for the Big Ten tournament, as Ohio State clinched the #7 seed with the Michigan loss tonight.

That's the official tournament bracket, released by the league on Sunday night.  If you want pretty formatting, you can click through to the link just above my makeshift bracket.  As you can see, they changed things up a bit from what I originally posted.  I'll be back either later today or tomorrow morning with my picks for postseason awards in the conference, and predictions for this week's Big Ten Tournament.  Thanks for reading.
