Efficiency Stats: Outstanding Effort Almost Overcomes Shaky Shooting

Illini were in position to win, but come up just short.

I'm glad I'm writing about the numbers, so I don't have to talk about officiating.  Great effort from the Illini against a very good Miami team, but the Hurricanes win it 63-59.  In my keys to this game, I thought the Illini would need an eFG% of at least 50% to win.  They didn't get there, but almost pulled out the win because of great second half defense and outstanding offensive rebounding.  Here are the final numbers.

  • Illinois 1.05 PPP
  • Illinois 43.4 eFG%
  • Illinois 14.2 TO%
  • Illinois 42.1 OReb%

Illinois did everything but shoot better in the second half.  They beat Miami on the boards, didn't turn it over in the second half, and ended up being pretty efficient overall.  Just not quite good enough.  As for Miami...

  • Miami 1.14 PPP
  • Miami 48.1 eFG%
  • Miami 10.9 TO%
  • Miami 37.1 OReb%

Amazingly, Illinois outrebounded that team.  That astounds me.  Miami was one of the best defensive rebounding teams in the country this season, and the Illini rebounded 42% of their misses tonight.  Kudos.  In particular, great work by sophomore Nnanna Egwu, who finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Coach Groce was very diplomatic when asked about the officiating tonight.  He was also very complimentary of his players' effort, and rightfully so.  Here's the coach:

All in all, I'd call this a successful season for Fighting Illini basketball.  23 wins, and a win in the NCAA Tournament after the disappointment of last season looks pretty good to me.  Thanks for everyone who read the blog, and everyone who called into the postgame show this season on WDWS and Lite Rock 97.5.  We'll be doing it again for football before you know it.

I think if you ask any Illini fan, they'll take a three-point deficit at halftime against a #2 seed.  The numbers aren't bad, but not quite good enough for the Illini if they want to win.  Tyler Griffey certainly gave the team a boost off the bench.

  • Illinois 0.90 PPP
  • Illinois 46.4 eFG%
  • Illinois 20.7 TO%
  • Illinois 29.4 ORreb%

The Illini will probably need to boost any and all of those numbers just a bit in the second half.  As for Miami...

  • Miami 1.04 PPP
  • Miami 51.8 eFG%
  • Miami 14.3 TO%
  • Miami 29.4 OReb%

Twenty more minutes to go.  Can the Illini do it again?
