Plays of the Game & Efficiency Stats - Ohio State

When your leading scorer is held scoreless, it's tough to win, especially on the road.  That's what happened to the Illini this evening in Columbus, as the combination of Shannon Scott, Aaron Craft, and a lingering injury kept Rayvonte Rice scoreless for the first time in his college career.  The Illini got 19 points from Joseph Bertrand, and Nnanna Egwu broke out of a big slump with 10 points and 9 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to snap what is now a five-game losing streak.  Here are my three nominees for the Dick Van Dyke Appliance World "WOW!" Play of the Game.  You can vote for your favorite in the comments at the bottom of the page.

After the game, John Groce was happy with the effort, but not the execution, especially when it came to taking care of the basketball.

On to tonight's efficiency stats, which show the Illini continuing to struggle on the offensive end of the floor.

Illinois

  • 0.91 PPP
  • 46.1 eFG%
  • 34.4 OReb%
  • 24.7 TO%
  • 23.5 FTA/FGA

Ohio State

  • 1.05 PPP
  • 50.0 eFG%
  • 32.3 OReb%
  • 20.3 TO%
  • 39.6 FTA/FGA

Next up for the Illini is a trip to Bloomington, Indiana on Sunday to face Tom Crean's Hoosiers.  IU has been up-and-down all season, so we'll see which Hoosier team shows up on Sunday.  The Illini really need a win to get things back on track.

DEE-FENSE!  Well, no offense anyway.  That was the first half between the Illini and Buckeyes tonight, which sees Illinois on top 25-24.  Here are the first half efficiency stats:

Illinois

  • 0.91 PPP
  • 42.3 eFG%
  • 41.2 OReb%
  • 21.9 TO%
  • 19.2 FTA/FGA

Ohio State

  • 0.90 PPP
  • 35.4 eFG%
  • 47.4 OReb%
  • 26.2 TO%
  • 41.7 FTA/FGA

Neither team is shooting well, both teams are crashing the offensive boards.  The Buckeyes are getting to the line more, but are also turning it over a bit more.  It all adds up to an ugly game, but one the Illini lead at the half.  More after the game.

By the way, my pick for last night's play of the game is the Bertrand three-pointer at the shot clock buzzer.  He hit a few big ones to keep the Illini close with Rice and Abrams struggling.
