Plays of the Game & Efficiency Stats - Minnesota

The Illini defense was outstanding tonight, and the offense was better than it's been in a while, as Illinois won at Williams Arena for the 11th time in 13 tries, dealing the Gophers' NCAA Tournament chances a severe blow in a 62-49 win.  Kendrick Nunn matched his career high with 19 points, but Nnanna Egwu was the player of the game with 14 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.  Plenty of good choices for tonight's nominees for the Dick Van Dyke Appliance World "WOW!" Play of the Game.  I'm going with the Tate steal leading to Nunn's breakaway dunk.  Choose your favorite in the comments below.

As you would expect, the coach was very happy, especially with the defense.

Now, for tonight's happy efficiency stats:

Illinois

  • 1.08 PPP
  • 51.1 eFG%
  • 29.6 OReb%
  • 19.1 TO%
  • 44.4 FTA/FGA

Minnesota

  • 0.88 PPP
  • 41.2 eFG%
  • 43.2 OReb%
  • 26.9 TO%
  • 23.5 FTA/FGA

Tonight is the first time the Illini posted an effective field goal percentage of higher than 50 percent since the home loss to Iowa on 2/1.  The Illini went a surprising 8-13 from three-point range, led by Nunn's 5-7 from long distance.  Illinois was better in every category, except for rebounding, but the Gophers turned it over enough to make up for that disparity.  Great win for Illinois tonight, now they get a week off before a home game against a confident Nebraska team.  We'll see if they can start a bit of a winning streak.  Thanks for reading.

A strange shooting half for the Illini, who shot 6-9 from three-point range, and just 2-16 on two-point field goals.  Anyway, here are the first half efficiency stats:

Illinois

  • 0.89 PPP
  • 44.0 eFG%
  • 23.5 OReb%
  • 18.5 TO%
  • 8.0 FTA/FGA

Minnesota

  • 1.02 PPP
  • 41.7 eFG%
  • 40.0 OReb%
  • 11.3 TO%
  • 10.0 FTA/FGA

The Illini have hung around in this one with long range shooting, which is unusual this seaon.  We'll see what happens in the second half.
