Plays of the Game & Efficiency Stats - Iowa

BOOM!  Jon Ekey has become a part of Illini lore, hitting a three-pointer with 0.5 seconds left to give Illinois a 66-63 win at Iowa to close out the regular season.  The Illini were outstanding on defense in the second half, holding the Hawkeyes to just 29 second-half points.  The 63 points for the game was Iowa's lowest scoring output of the season.  Time for my three nominees for the Dick Van Dyke Appliance World "WOW!" Play of the Game, though there's really no drama as to which one is the winner tonight.

Nnanna Egwu had himself a game tonight as well with 14pts and 6 rebounds, and he talked about with Brian and Jerry afterward.

And, I think John Groce was pretty happy as well, especially with his teams resilience.

Now, for tonight's happy efficiency stats.

Illinois

  • 1.11 PPP
  • 50.9 eFG% (the Illini were above 50% both times they played Iowa)
  • 40.0 OReb%
  • 21.8 TO%
  • 22.6 FTA/FGA

Iowa

  • 1.11 PPP
  • 50.0 eFG%
  • 33.3 OReb%
  • 12.4 TO%
  • 25.9 FTA/FGA

Illinois cut down on the turnovers in the second half with just five, and outrebounded Iowa, which isn't easy.  An outstanding effort to close the regular season.  The Illini will be either the #7 or #9 seed, depending on the outcome of tomorrow's Penn State-Minnesota game.  If PSU wins, the Illini are the #7 seed, facing the Nittany Lions.  If the Gophers win, Illinois is the #9 seed, taking on Indiana.  Thanks for reading!

Well, if you hadn't seen any of this game and saw that the Illini were down by five at halftime, you'd probably be pretty pleased.  But, when you found out the Illini had a 14-point lead early in the half, your pleasure would go away.  That's what happened, and one key play was Nnanna Egwu picking up his second personal foul.  That coincided with a big Hawkeye run.  Here are the first half efficiency stats:

Illinois

  • 0.97 PPP
  • 48.2 eFG%
  • 47.1 OReb%
  • 26.8 TO%
  • 14.3 FTA/FGA

Iowa

  • 1.14 PPP
  • 51.8 eFG%
  • 37.5 OReb%
  • 13.4 TO%
  • 23.5 FTA/FGA

One thing to watch in the second half are turnovers.  The Illini had eight of them in the first of them, four by Tracy Abrams.  They have to a better job taking care of the ball in the second half to have a chance.  More after the game.
