Real Estate Is Awesome
So I'm going through a ton of music on my computer, finding things I don't listen to anymore and generally updating everything, when I come across a folder labeled "Real Estate". I vaguely recall getting their debut a few years ago, so I check it out to see what it's all about, and now I don't remember why I stopped listening to this album. The atmosphere is great, it's music that goes perfectly with sitting on a beach in Pensacola, Florida or sitting inside on a chilly, foggy day like today. Few albums can give off that kind of pervasive chill, but Real Estate does it effortlessly. The hazy vocals seem to hide behind the sunny, jangly guitars and bare-bones drums. My personal favorite track of theirs is entitled "Fake Blues", but both of their albums, the self-titled debut and the follow-up Days are great listens. They keep coming back in an almost melancholy way, like searching for seashells alone on a beach with a gray storm rolling in. It does take a bit of listening to really get into the sparse grooves here, but once it sinks in, it's intoxicating.
