Umphrey's in Milwaukee

Two thumbs way up for what was a pretty heavy show this past weekend in Milwaukee. The Riverside had its foundations shaken as Umphrey's McGee ended their three-night run with a mind-melting blowout on Saturday night. Highlights included a bone-crunching "Higgins", a blistering, out-of-control "40's Theme", two jamwiches (when they play one song, jam into a different one, and come back to the original) consisting of "Plunger">"Much Obliged">"Plunger" and "Mantis">"Mulche's Odyssey">"Mantis", guitarist Jake Cinninger playing keys on the grooviest "Miami Virtue" I've ever heard, and the cover of Metallica's "...And Justice For All". I also enjoyed "Sweetness" and "No Diablo", both firsts for me, as well as two of my personal favorites, the breezy "Comma Later", and the chugging "Much Obliged". Also, it being the mash-up weekend, they combined three of their songs ("Push the Pig", "Booth Love", and "Deeper") into one and created one of the coolest sounding songs I've ever had the good fortune to witness. Top it all off with solid face-melters "Jajunk" and "Bridgeless" and it was one of the heavier shows I've seen them play, and one of the best.
