From the makers of the TV series, Intervention, comes a new series on Animal Planet, "Confessions: Animal Hoarding."
Animal hoarding cases are disturbing and often misunderstood. Animal hoarders in most cases honestly believe they are providing quality care to their animals. Somehow, and often to the disbelief of outside observers, these people have experienced some kind of disconnect from reality. Although Animal Hoarder is not an actual psychological diagnosis, there is now no doubt that animal hoarders need mental health treatment. Some theorize that animal hoarding is a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder.
I imagine that parts of this series will be hard to watch. But even without seeing it, I'm glad it has been made and is being aired. For the benefit of animals, hoarders themselves, and the people who love them, raising awareness about this phenomenon and appropriate ways of intervening is important. It could even save lives.
