Has anyone out there read this book, Oogy, the Dog Only a Family Could Love?
In the smallest of nutshells, it's about a dog that was badly injured as a "bait dog" (a dog sacrificed in the process of training fighting dogs), survived, and was adopted by the author's family.

It sounds like the book may actually explore the parallels between pet adoption and the adoption of children. Could be a good read.
