Book Review: "The Lost Dogs - Michael Vick’s Dogs and their Tale of Rescue and Redemption" by Jim Gorant

It’s probably no surprise that I read a lot of dog books.  Unfortunately, many of them are disappointing.  Publishers seem willing to release just about any sentimental clap-trap that comes down the pike – especially if the author has name recognition - in order to make a quick buck off the dog-loving public. 


Cats and Babies: Can't we all just get along?

It’s true, we do occasionally have cats surrendered to the humane society because of cat-infant conflict.  And it seems to be happening a little more than usual lately.  What’s the actual problem in these cases?  We’ve been hearing this complaint:  the cat keeps jumping into the crib.

This summer I picked up the charcoal and started drawing again – a hobby I had dabbled in back in 2004, but then abandoned after becoming director of the Champaign County Humane Society – a job that can be “all consuming” to say the least.


Election Results - Some Great News for Dogs & Bad News for Puppy Mills

Last night’s election brought great news for dogs in Missouri with the passage of the State’s Proposition B – legislation setting in place “common-sense, enforceable standards for large-scale dog breeding facilities” throughout the State.
