Bill Walsh -- architect of a game

College and professional football fans have been reading a lot about Bill Walsh, the former Stanford and San Francisco 49ers football coach who died this week of leukemia.

An exacting teacher who had the vision thing, Walsh created the pass-first approach that's proved so popular and effective. By the way, former Illinois football coach Mike White was part of Walsh's coaching tree. He was a Walsh assistant at Stanford and 49ers and a longtime close friend.
