Better living through chemistry?

   The race for athletic excellence has created a new form of competition -- scientists taking on scientists in an endless cat-and-mouse game of evasion and detection.
   Athletes who use performance-enhancing drugs don’t stop using them just because  they are illegal and they might get caught. Instead, they look for better and more sophisticated chemical enhancements that will allow them to escape detection.
   Two new drug-related stories involving athletes are in the news, and quite a few of the names mentioned are well known.
