Economics is complicated stuff. Besides, nobody wants to listen toan answer to a complicated question that makes more than 30 seconds.

So what's causing those high gasoline prices? Why, it's the fault of speculators, whoever they are. The (expletive-deleted)rats.
That pretty much sums up the content of our political speech these days. Complicated issues of supply and demand, exacerbated by the political realities of an election year, are ignoredm and pablum is served up by the train-car load.
So what about those high gasoline prices? If you want a real explanation, read this column from Robert Samuelson. You won't hear anything like it from any elected official.
