Weekend Wrap — Jones shines in playoff win

Every week during the prep football season, IlliniHQ will give a wrap-up of how Illini commits and targets fared during the previous weekend's games. Here are a few notes from week 11.

THE COMMITS





AARON BAILEY and Bolingbrook (Ill.) High School saw its season end with a 44-33 loss to Naperville Neuqua Valley High School in a Class 8A second-round playoff game in Bolingbrook on Friday night. Bailey, a senior quarterback who committed to Illinois in April and hadn't played since spraining the MCL in his right knee on Sept. 28, rushed for 225 yards on 28 carries in his first game back from injury. Bailey added three rushing touchdowns while he threw for 76 yards and a touchdown. Bolingbrook, last year's 8A state champion, finished 8-3.

DILLAN CAZLEY, a senior defensive back from Charleston (Ill.) High School who committed in late February, and the Trojans lost 42-14 at Rochester High School in a Class 4A second-round playoff game on Saturday evening. Cazley wound up with 14 rushing yards on six carries while he caught three passes for 17 yards. Charleston ended its season 9-2.

JESSE CHADWELL, a senior offensive lineman out of Clarkston High School in Clarkston, Mich., and his Wolves ran their record to 11-0 with a 35-19 home win against Grand Blanc High School on Friday night in a Division 1 second-round playoff game. Chadwell, who committed to Illinois in mid-March, and the Wolves' offensive line helped Clarkston running back Ian Erickson rush for 214 yards on 42 carries. Clarkston will meet Rockford High School this weekend in a Division 1 regional final game in Clarkston.

JARROD CLEMENTS and REON DAWSON of Trotwood-Madison High School (Ohio) romped to a 48-0 win at Cincinnati's Mt. Healthy High School on Friday night in a Division II Region 8 quarterfinal playoff game. Clements is a senior defensive end who committed to Illinois in early May, and Dawson is a senior athlete who committed in late May. Dawson had an interception in the win, while Clements, who returned to action four games ago after missing time with a torn ACL, helped the defense pitch the shutout. Trotwood-Madison, now 9-2, will meet Cincinnati's Winton Woods High School (8-3) this weekend in a Region 8 semifinal playoff game.

CALEB DAY, a senior athlete from Hilliard, Ohio and his Darby High School squad improved to 11-0 after a 31-10 home win against Westerville South High School in a Division I Region 3 quarterfinal playoff game on Saturday night. Day, who committed to Illinois in June, rushed for 45 yards on seven carries, including a 15-yard touchdown run, and also picked off a pass. Darby will continue its playoff run this weekend against 10-1 Pickerington North High School in a Division I Region 3 semifinal playoff game.

KENDRICK FOSTER, a senior running back from Peoria Richwoods (Ill.) High School, was limited with an ankle injury in the Knights' 35-32 season-ending loss at unbeaten Crete-Monee High School on Saturday afternoon in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs. Richwoods ended the season 8-3.

MICHAEL HERMOSILLO, a senior running back at Ottawa (Ill.) High School, and the Pirates rallied to edge Rock Island High School 21-20 at home on Saturday afternoon in a Class 6A second-round playoff game. Hermosillo, who committed to Illinois in mid-August, rushed for 180 yards on 25 carries, including a 35-yard touchdown run, to up his season total to 1,960 yards. Hermosillo also came down with the game-winning touchdown catch, a 28-yard grab, with 1:30 left in the game. The 11-0 Pirates will face another unbeaten, 11-0 Crete-Monee High School, in a 6A quarterfinal game this weekend.



MERRICK JACKSON and Belleville Althoff Catholic (Ill.) High School kept its season alive with 32-20 win at Athens High School on Saturday in Class 2A second-round playoff action. Jackson, a senior defensive tackle, committed to Illinois in late April. The Crusaders, now 8-3, will host 11-0 Casey-Westfield High School this weekend in a 2A quarterfinal game.

JOSHUA JONES, a senior defensive back from Walled Lake, Mich., and his Western High School teammates had no problem in a 49-27 win at Fenton High School in a Division 2 second-round playoff game on Friday night. Jones, who committed to Illinois in late June, totaled 246 yards of offense and scored five touchdowns. He rushed for 152 yards on 12 carries, including three touchdowns, while he caught two touchdown passes on his way to 86 receiving yards on three catches. He also added an interception. Western High, now 9-2, and Jones will square off against 9-2 Birmingham Brother Rice High School this weekend in a Division 2 regional final game.

DARIUS MOSELY, a senior defensive back from O'Fallon (Ill.) High School, and the Panthers lost 42-27 to Lyons Township High School at home on Saturday night in a Class 8A second-round playoff game. Mosely, who committed to Illinois in June, caught a 41-yard touchdown pass, but also lost a fumble. O'Fallon ended its season 8-3.

AUSTIN SCHMIDT, a senior offensive lineman from Galena, Ohio, who plays at Olentangy High School in Lewis Center, Ohio, and the Braves knocked off Dublin Scioto 21-17 on Saturday night at home to move in the Division I Region 3 playoffs. Olentangy, now 10-1, and Schmidt, who committed to Illinois in early May, will meet 9-2 Hilliard Davidson High School in a Region 3 semifinal playoff game this weekend.



REGGIE SPEARMAN, a senior linebacker from Chicago Simeon High School who committed in early August, and the Wolverines saw their season end with a 41-6 loss against Chicago Mt. Carmel in a Class 8A second-round playoff game on Friday night. Simeon ended its season at 8-2.

TYLER WHITE, a senior tight end from Plainwell (Mich.) High School who committed to Illinois in early October, and the Trojans lost 26-10 to Harper Creek High School in a Division 3 second-round playoff game on Friday night to end their season. White had Plainwell's only touchdown on a 72-yard reception, and finished with 96 receiving yards on two catches. Plainwell finished the year at 7-4.

THE TARGETS








JOHN ARMSTRONG, a senior running back from Olympia High School out of Orlando, Fla., along with his teammate, senior linebacker RAMAR DENNIS, and the rest of the Titans overwhelmed Ocoee (Fla.) High School 35-14 on Friday night to improve to 5-4. Armstrong had a stellar game, rushing for 146 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns while hauling in 30 receiving yards on two catches, including a touchdown. Armstrong has Illinois, Duke and Wake Forest among his top three schools. Dennis, who has Illinois, Northern Illinois, Florida Atlantic, Cincinnati, South Alabama and Syracuse among his main pursuers, came through with a team-high 16 tackles in the win. Olympia will end the regular season at Mainland (Fla.) High School this Friday night.




JOSH CAZLEY






The junior running back and defensive back from Charleston (Ill.) High School rushed for 64 yards on 10 carries and caught nine passes for 84 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown reception, in Charleston's 42-14 loss at Rochester High School on Saturday in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs. Cazley is the younger brother of Illinois commit Dillan Cazley.




DALYN DAWKINS






The senior running back from Trinity (Ky.) High School helped the Shamrocks open the Class 6A playoffs with a convincing 56-7 home win against Clark County in the first round on Friday night. Dawkins rushed for 90 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns. Trinity, now 9-1, will face Madison Central this weekend in a second-round playoff game. Dawkins has offers from Illinois, Cincinnati, Colorado State, Purdue and Western Kentucky.

DAESEAN HAMILTON






The senior wide receiver from Stafford, Va., and his Mountain View High School teammates lost their regular season finale 41-32 at Brooke Point (Va.) High School on Friday night. Hamilton — who has offers from Illinois and Penn State, with Duke, Miami (Fla.), Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest in the mix — caught eight passes for 111 yards, including touchdown grabs of 27 and 25 yards, in the loss. Mountain View dropped to 6-4 on the season, but the Wildcats will  open the Virginia state playoffs this weekend against Massaponax High School in a Northwest Region Division 5 first-round game.



CAMERON MAMMEN





The senior quarterback from Urbana (Ill.) High School and the Tigers ended their season with a 65-20 loss at Morris High School in a Class 5A second-round playoff loss. Mammen threw one touchdown pass and completed 12-of-21 passes for 202 yards, but threw three interceptions. He added 88 rushing yards and scored on touchdown runs of 61 and 3 yards to account for all of Urbana's scores. Mammen has interest from Illinois, a host of Mid-American Conference schools and several Football Championship Subdivision schools. Urbana closed the season at 9-2.



NYLES MORGAN



The junior linebacker from Crete-Monee (Ill.) High School and the Warriors held on for a 35-32 win against Peoria Richwoods High School and Illinois commit Kendrick Foster at home on Saturday afternoon in a Class 6A second-round playoff game. The 11-0 Crete-Monee team will face another Illinois commit, Ottawa High School running back Michael Hermosillo, this weekend in a 6A quarterfinal matchup. Morgan has offers from Illinois, Michigan State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Purdue, among others.
