Weekend Wrap — Hill helps Lancers stay perfect
Every week during the prep basketball season, IlliniHQ will give a wrap-up of how Illini commits and targets fared during the previous weekend's games. Here are a few notes from the week that was.
AUSTIN COLBERT, a senior forward/center from Gill St. Bernard's (N.J.) School, and the Knights started the season 0-2 after a 58-38 loss to Patrick (N.J.) School on Saturday and a 74-60 loss to Our Savior New American (N.Y.) High School on Friday during their season opener. Colbert isn't eligible to play until January as he sits out due to New Jersey state transfer rules. St. Bernard's returns to the court on Tuesday night at home against Franklin (N.J.) High School and Thursday night at Bridgewater-Raritan (N.J.) High School.
MALCOLM HILL, a senior guard/forward from Belleville East (Ill.) High School, had 29 points in the Lancers' 64-43 home win on Friday night against O'Fallon (Ill.) High School, which came after Hill and the Lancers beat cross-town rival Belleville West (Ill.) High School 74-55 last Tuesday night on the road. Hill had 25 points in the win against the Maroons. Belleville East, now 8-0, gets back in action this Friday night at home against Alton (Ill.) High School.
MAVERICK MORGAN, a senior center from Springboro (Ohio) High School, and the Panthers improved to 6-1 on Sunday after a 67-47 win against Centerville (Ohio) High School at West Carrollton (Ohio) High School. Morgan finished a perfect 8-of-8 from the field en route to 20 points. On Friday night, Morgan had 19 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots in Springboro's 79-43 home win against Fairborn (Ohio) High School. That showing came after Morgan had 23 points, 11 rebonds and five blocked shots in Springboro's 83-51 win last Tuesday night at home against Sidney (Ohio) High School. Springboro and Morgan return to the court this Friday night at West Carrollton.
KENDRICK NUNN and JAYLON TATE, senior guards from Chicago Simeon High School, and the Wolverines are 2-1 after winning 55-44 at Arlington (Tenn.) High School on Saturday night, two days after the Wolverines lost 67-57 against DeSoto (Texas) High School in a game televised on ESPN Thursday night at Grand Prairie (Texas) High School. Tate had seven points and eight assists in the win against Arlington. In the loss to DeSoto, Tate led the Wolverines with 12 points and four assists while Nunn had 11 points and three rebounds. Simeon plays at Chicago Carver on Monday, hosts Larry Hawkins Charter School out of Chicago on Wednesday and hosts Chicago Brooks this Friday.
MICHAEL FINKE, a junior forward from Champaign Centennial (Ill.) High School who verbally committed on Dec. 12, had 16 points in the Chargers' 53-51 home win on Friday night against Normal West (Ill.) High School. Finke also dropped in 15 points in Centennial's 64-54 win at Urbana last Tuesday night. Finke and Centennial return to the court this Friday night at Danville (Ill.) High School.
CLIFF ALEXANDER, a junior center from Chicago Curie High School, had 18 points and five rebounds in Curie's 73-51 loss against Indianapolis Tech on Saturday in the Indy Legacy Indiana vs. Illinois Showcase. Alexander had 27 points, 16 rebounds and six blocks in Curie's 66-59 overtime win at home on Thursday against Chicago Hyde Park, which came after a 65-35 win last Tuesday against Chicago Dunbar. Alexander, who has offers from Illinois, Connecticut, DePaul, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan Michigan State, Missouri, Tennessee and Wisconsin, and the Condors (2-4) will play Chicago King on Tuesday and Chicago Kenwood this Thursday.
DARIUS AUSTIN, a junior forward from Cahokia (Ill.) High School, and his Comanches sit at 8-2 going into play this week after two losses this weekend. Cahokia lost 73-72 against Bosse (Ind.) High School and Illinois target Jaquan Lyle on Saturday night in the Midwest Showdown Shootout at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., which came after Cahokia lost 58-54 in overtime at Mount Vernon (Ill.) High School. Austin, who has interest from Illinois, Cincinnati, Iowa, Michigan, Xavier and others, along with offers from DePaul and St. Louis, had a game-high 21 points against Mount Vernon. Cahokia and Austin are off until the Centralia Holiday Tournament arrives on Dec. 27. Cahokia opens the tournament against Champaign (Ill.) Central High School.
LARRY AUSTIN, JR., a junior guard from Springfield Lanphier (Ill.) High School, had 17 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and two blocks in the Lions' 85-40 home win against Taylorville (Ill.) High School on Friday night. Lanphier improved to 4-4 with the win. Austin, who has offers from Illinois, Bradley, DePaul, Iowa, Kansas State, Memphis, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Southern Methodist and Wake Forest, and Lanphier will return to the court this Friday night when it hosts Springfield Southeast (Ill.) High School.
TREVON BLUIETT, a junior forward from Park Tudor School in Indianapolis, had 33 points in the Panthers' 77-35 win against Triton Central on Saturday night to improve to 5-0. Bluiett, who has offers from Illinois, Butler, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas State, Louisville, Michigan, Notre Dame, Purdue and Xavier, and Park Tudor will play this Friday at North Central (Ind.) High School.
HYRON EDWARDS, a sophomore point guard from East Chicago Central (Ind.) High School, and the Cardinals were off last week. Edwards, who has offers from Illinois, Indiana and Purdue, are back in action on Tuesday at home against Mishawaka (Ind.) High School.
JAQUAN LYLE, a junior point guard from Evansville Bosse (Ind.) High School, scored 28 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had the game-winning dunk in the Bulldogs' 73-72 win against Cahokia and Illinois target Darius Austin on Saturday night in St. Charles, Mo. That effort came after Lyle, who has offers from Illinois, Cincinnati, Indiana, Louisville, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Tennessee and Texas, scored 36 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had 10 assists in Bosse's 84-51 victory against Washington (Ind.) High School on Friday night. This came after Lyle had 32 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in Bosse's 100-66 win at Reitz Memorial (Ind.) High School last Tuesday night. The Bulldogs (3-1) and Lyle play at Princeton (Ind.) High School this Friday night.
CHARLES MATTHEWS, a sophomore guard from Chicago St. Rita, and the Mustangs won 53-45 at home on Friday night against Chicago Leo. Matthews, who has offers from Illinois, Arizona, DePaul, Providence and Southern Methodist, fouled out midway through the fourth quarter, but older brother DOMINIQUE MATTHEWS, a junior guard who is on Illinois' radar, led the Mustangs (6-2) with 19 points. St. Rita resumes play this Friday night at Loyola (Ill.) Academy.
SEAN O'MARA, a junior forward from Benet Academy in Lisle, Ill., who has offers from Illinois, Boston College, DePaul, Georgia Tech, Marquette and Virginia, among others, has helped lead the Redwings to a 10-2 record. O'Mara had 17 points and eight rebounds in Benet's 44-31 win on Saturday against St. Ignatius in the Chicago Catholic/East Suburban Catholic Shootout at Loyola Academy, which came after Benet went 3-1 in the Plainfield North Holiday Tournament, with its only loss coming in a 39-34 defeat to Thornton Fractional North on Wednesday. Benet beat Lockport 47-42 on Friday night, with O'Mara scoring seven points. In Benet's 41-40 win against Lincoln-Way North on Thursday, O'Mara scored 21 points. O'Mara had 14 points and seven rebounds in Benet's 55-35 win against Plainfield North to open the tournament last Tuesday. Benet and O'Mara open play in the 32-team Proviso West Holiday Tournament at 3:45 p.m. this Saturday against Chicago Urban Prep West.
JAHLIL OKAFOR, a junior center from Chicago Whitney Young, had 27 points on 13-of-13 shooting on Friday night during the Dolphins' 98-49 home rout of Chicago Westinghouse. Okafor, who has offers from Arkansas, DePaul, Illinois, Michigan State, North Carolina and Ohio State, among others, with interest from a multitude of Division I schools, added nine rebounds and six blocked shots. Okafor and the Dolphins (3-0) play at Chicago Power House Charter School on Monday night and hosts Chicago Orr on Wednesday before starting play Thursday night in the City of Palms Tournament in Fort Myers, Fla.
TYLER ULIS, a junior point guard from Marian Catholic (Ill.) High School who has interest from Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee and others, had 26 points, seven rebounds and three assists in Marian Catholic's 61-48 road victory on Friday night against Nazareth (Ill.) Academy. Ulis and the 8-1 Spartans resume play this Saturday against Lemont in the Crete-Monee Shootout.
D.J. WILLIAMS, a sophomore forward out of Chicago Simeon, will help the Wolverines (2-1) kick off Chicago Public League play this week. Williams has offers from Illinois, Cal-Poly, DePaul, Nebraska and SMU.
KEVIN ZABO, a junior point guard out of Wolfeboro Brewster (N.H.) Academy, lost 73-71 at Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.) School on Saturday but won 119-50 at home on Wednesday to Leadership Prep out of Connecticut. Zabo has offers from Illinois, George Washington, Iowa State and West Virginia with interest from Connecticut, Marquette and Ohio State, among others.
