Allegretti: 'The food has been great'

Future Illinois offensive lineman Nick Allegretti is in San Antonio this week for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

The Lincoln-Way East product, who is on the East squad and is the first Illinois recruit to take part in this game since 2009, will check in from the Lone Star state throughout the week leading up to Saturday’s noon kickoff at the Alamodome.

"Monday was a really fun day. We had two practices, our first since I arrived here, and it was a blast going up against the best players in the country. We installed just about all of our plays, and that went pretty well. We had one classroom session where we watched a PowerPoint presentation on the plays.

"All the guys are great and the coaches are extremely knowledgeable and have taught me some very cool stuff about zone blocking. We had one practice on Tuesday, are off today and then have one more practice on Thursday before the game on Saturday.

"It's been very cold here so far. It was 38 degrees the first day of practice, but it's still warmer than Chicago."

"The best part has been just hanging out with all the guys, playing ping pong and pool with them. They are all really nice and easy to be around.

"My last game at Lincoln-Way East was in mid-November, but it was a pretty easy transition back into football. Conditioning wasn't a problem because of wrestling season.

"The food has been great so far. We went to a steak house Monday night. It was cooked a little differently than what it's like back home, but it was super juicy. We've been able to walk around San Antonio a bit. The other night we got ice cream and walked on the River Walk here, which was really cool because it takes you to pretty much anywhere in the city.

"In the past on New Year's Eve, I have just hung out with friends and family, but this year we are having a party with all the football players somewhere around here. Last year they brought in the rapper Wale, so it be should be a ton of fun."
