Allegretti gets sneak peek
Nick Allegretti will suit up for the East team at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in roughly 48 hours.
The center from Lincoln-Way East and incoming Illinois recruit who can sign with Tim Beckman's team on Feb. 5 has spent the past four days in San Antonio getting ready for Saturday's noon kickoff from the Alamodome.
Here's his latest update:
"We spent New Year's Eve getting the chance to watch a movie premier of 'When the Game Stands Tall.' It's about the De La Salle High School football team out in California and the long winning streak they had in the early 1990s through the early 2000s. It was a great movie about adversity and perseverance. Then we had a party with the All-Americans, both football and band members down here.
"My mom flew down here with me on Sunday from Chicago, and my dad, brother and a few friends came down on Tuesday. It's been great to have my family here. I get to visit them whenever I feel like I need to slip away from all the players.
"Practice was great on Tuesday. I did very well in run-blocking against some very rough defensive linemen, and won all of my one-on-one competitions.
"We didn't practice on Wednesday, but we were able to go inside the Alamodome and see what that place is like. We also had a chance to spend some time at children's hospitals in the San Antonio area. That was a tremendous experience because we got to put some smiles on the faces of little kids that are going through some very tough times.
"I had a chance to watch some of the bowl games on New Year's Day. It's a really cool feeling knowing I could be playing in one next year at this time, but also surreal to think that I'm going to be playing on national television every week and can be watched by millions of people."
