Weekend Wrap — St. Rita's Matthews contributes in two wins

Every week during the high school basketball season, recruiting blogger MATT DANIELS will give a wrap-up of how Illini commits and targets fared during the previous week's worth of games.

THE RECRUITS
LERON BLACK, a senior forward from Memphis (Tenn.) White Station High School who signed with Illinois on Nov. 15 after committing on Sept. 1, and the Spartans won 77-61 at Memphis (Tenn.) Whitehaven High School on Friday night, with Black scoring 19 points. Prior to Friday, Black had 11 points during a 77-74 overtime win last Monday night at Memphis (Tenn.) Hamilton High School. Black and the Spartans (22-1) are slated to host Memphis (Tenn.) Central High School at 7:30 p.m. this Tuesday before playing at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Memphis (Tenn.) Overton High School and then playing at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Memphis (Tenn.) Melrose High School.

MICHAEL FINKE, a senior forward from Champaign (Ill.) Centennial High School who signed with Illinois on Nov. 13 after committing on Dec. 12, 2012, and the Chargers beat Champaign (Ill.) Central High School 57-43 on Friday night at home. Finke had 26 points and 12 rebounds against Champaign Central. Finke and the Chargers (16-4) are set to host Mahomet-Seymour (Ill.) High School at 7:30 p.m. this Wednesday.

AARON JORDAN, a junior shooting guard from Plainfield (Ill.) East High School who committed to Illinois on Jan. 4, and the Bengals picked up two wins this weekend, beating Plainfield (Ill.) South High School 60-57 on Saturday night at home and beating Minooka (Ill.) High School 57-47 at home on Friday night. Jordan scored 15 points against Plainfield South and had 11 points against Minooka. Jordan and the Bengals (13-7) resume play at 6:30 p.m. this Friday at home against Plainfield (Ill.) North High School before playing at 7 p.m. this Saturday at Naperville (Ill.) North High School.  

D.J. WILLIAMS, a junior forward from Chicago Simeon High School who committed to Illinois on Nov. 5, and the Wolverines won 76-72 in overtime on Thursday at Chicago Bogan High School. Williams and Simeon (15-4) are slated to take part in the Chicago Public League playoffs starting this week.  

THE TARGETS
CARLTON BRAGG, a junior power forward from Cleveland Villa-Angela St. Joseph High School is out for most likely a month after he broke his big toe during a team practice last Monday. Bragg has offers from Illinois, Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland State, Connecticut, Dayton, DePaul, Georgetown, Indiana, Kansas, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan State, Missouri, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Texas, UCLA, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The Vikings won 79-43 at Warren (Ohio) John F. Kennedy High School on Friday night, which came after Villa Angela-St. Joseph won 54-44 at Cleveland Central Catholic High School on Thursday night. Villa Angela-St. Joseph (10-5) will host Parma Heights (Ohio) Holy Name High School at 6:30 p.m. on Monday before playing at Akron (Ohio) St. Vincent-St. Mary High School at 6:30 p.m. this Thursday and at Cleveland Trinity High School at 6:30 p.m. this Friday.

JALEN BRUNSON, a junior point guard from Lincolnshire (Ill.) Stevenson High School, and the Patriots beat Gurnee (Ill.) Warren High School 66-51 on Saturday night at home. Brunson finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Brunson, who has offers from Illinois, Connecticut, Creighton, DePaul, Oklahoma State, Purdue, SMU, Temple, Tulsa, Virginia and Xavier, and the Patriots (18-1) are back in action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Lake Zurich (Ill.) High School before tangling with Zion-Benton (Ill.) High School at home at 7 p.m. on Friday and playing Lisle (Ill.) Benet Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at Batavia (Ill.) High School.  

JALEN COLEMAN, a junior shooting guard at La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind., and the Lakers had the week off. Coleman, who has offers from Illinois, Arizona, Cincinnati, Indiana, Memphis, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Providence, Purdue, UCLA and Xavier, and the Lakers (17-2) get back into action at 7:30 p.m. this Friday at home against New Faith Christian Academy out of Ellenwood, Ga.

NOJEL EASTERN, a freshman guard from Evanston (Ill.) High School, and the Wildkits split a pair of games this weekend. Evanston lost 71-58 on Saturday evening against Lisle (Ill.) Benet Academy at Wilmette (Ill.) Loyola Academy, but won 58-49 at home against Glenview (Ill.) Glenbrook South High School on Friday night. Eastern did not play in either game because of a sore knee. Eastern, who has interest from Illinois, Creighton, Duke, Indiana, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State and Xavier, among others, and the Wildkits (16-6) are set to resume play this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Park Ridge (Ill.) Maine South High School before hosting Palatine (Ill.) Fremd High School at 7 p.m. this Saturday.
 
HYRON EDWARDS, a junior point guard at East Chicago (Ind.) Central High School, and the Cardinals won 58-36 at Gary (Ind.) West Side High School on Thursday night. Edwards produced 24 points, five assists, five rebounds and three steals in the win. Edwards, who has offers from Illinois, Indiana and Purdue, and the Cardinals (8-5) are back in action this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at home against Crown Point (Ind.) High School.

MONTAQUE GILL-CAESAR, a junior small forward at Huntington (W. Va.) Prep and the Irish beat Kennedy (N.C.) Charter School 79-48 on Friday night and routed Faith Baptist Christian Academy out of Ludowici, Ga., 75-36 on Thursday night. Both wins came as part of the Huntington Invitational. Gill-Caesar, who might reclassify for the Class of 2014 and who has offers from Alabama, Baylor, Kansas, Memphis, Missouri, Providence and West Virginia for the Class of 2014 and offers from Illinois and Ohio State for the Class of 2015, and the Irish (21-4) are slated to host Carlisle (Va.) School at 6 p.m. this Wednesday.

KAIN HARRIS, a junior shooting guard at Chicago Morgan Park High School, and the Mustangs beat Chicago Hales Franciscan High School 81-36 on Saturday at the Chicago Orr Shootout. Harris had 10 points in the win. Harris, who has offers from Bradley, DePaul, Minnesota, South Carolina and West Virginia, along with interest from Illinois, Creighton, Iowa State, SMU and Tennessee, and the Mustangs (15-5) are scheduled to be off until the Chicago Public League playoffs.

CHARLES MATTHEWS, a junior combo guard at Chicago St. Rita High School, and the Mustangs picked up two wins this weekend. St. Rita won 50-35 on Saturday night at Chicago Brother Rice High School, with Matthews scoring 10 points. On Friday night, the Mustangs beat Chicago Hales Franciscan High School 65-56 at home. Matthews compiled 14 points in the victory. Matthews, who has offers from Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Marquette, Michigan State, Ohio State, SMU and Wisconsin, and the Mustangs (10-6) are set to have three games this week, hosting Chicago Marist High School at 7 p.m. on Tuesday before playing at 7 p.m. on Friday at Chicago St. Francis de Sales High School and at 7 p.m. this Saturday at Chicago De La Salle High School.

LUWANE PIPKINS, a junior guard at Chicago Bogan High School, and the Bengals posted a 2-1 record last week, playing three games in three days. Bogan beat Chicago DuSable High School 64-54 on Saturday at the Chicag Orr Shootout, with Pipkins scoring 21 points. Prior to Saturday, Bogan beat Chicago Harlan 89-73 on Friday and Pipkins had 31 points in the win. Chicago Simeon beat Bogan 76-72 on Bogan's home court on Thursday. Pipkins had 27 points and eight steals in the loss to the Wolverines. Pipkins, who has offers from Bradley, Illinois-Chicago, Massachusetts and Northern Illinois, along with interest from Illinois, Creighton, DePaul, Indiana State, LaSalle and Valparaiso, and the Bengals (22-3) are set to host Chicago Vocational on Monday before the Chicago Public League playoffs begin.

DIAMOND STONE, a junior center at Whitefish Bay (Wis.) Dominican High School, and the Green Knights beat Racine (Wis.) The Prairie School 55-24 at home on Thursday night, with Stone scoring 29 points. Stone, who has offers from Illinois, Arizona, Connecticut, DePaul, Duke, Georgetown, Indiana, Marquette, Maryland, Tennessee, Texas A&M, UCLA and Wisconsin, and the Green Knights (13-3) will host Burlington (Wis.) Catholic Central high School at 7:30 p.m. this Tuesday before playing at 7:30 p.m. this Friday at Racine (Wis.) Saint Catherine's High School.

JAYSON TATUM, a sophomore forward at St. Louis Chaminade High School, and the Red Devils won three road games last week. Tatum and the Red Devils won 70-59 on Friday night at St. Louis Christian Brothers College High School. Tatum had 33 points and 14 rebounds against CBC, the school at which his father, Justin Tatum, is the head coach. Tatum had 14 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Red Devils in a 69-48 win at St. Louis Maplewood High School on Thursday night, and produced 30 points to go along with 14 rebonds in an 80-40 win at St. Louis Lutheran North High School last Tuesday night. Tatum, who has offers from Illinois, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Marquette, Missouri and St. Louis, and the Red Devils (18-1) are set to host St. Louis University High School at 7 p.m. this Friday.

JEREMIAH TILMON, a freshman forward at East St. Louis (Ill.) High School, and the Flyers lost 59-54 at Belleville (Ill.) East High School on Friday night. Tilmon, who has interest from Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and St. Louis, among others, and the Flyers (12-6) resume play at 6 p.m. this Tuesday at home against Edwardsville (Ill.) High School before traveling to Edwardsville to take on the Tigers in a rematch at 7:30 p.m. this Friday.

ELIJAH THOMAS, a junior power forward from Lancaster (Texas) High School, and the Tigers beat Mansfield (Texas) Lakeridge High School 75-68 at home on Friday night. Thomas had 17 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and four blocks in the victory. Prior to that win, Lancaster won 79-49 at Seguin (Texas) High School last Tuesday night. Thomas compiled 21 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and six blocks in the win. Thomas, who has offers from Illinois, Alabama, Arizona, Baylor, Florida, Georgetown, Indiana, Louisville, LSU, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, UNLV and USC, and the Tigers (23-4) are scheduled to play at Red Oak (Texas) High School at 8 p.m. this Tuesday before hosting Ennis (Texas) High School at 8 p.m. this Friday.

JOSEPH TOYE, a junior forward at La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind., and  the Lakers had the week off. Toye, who has offers from Auburn, Bradley, Creighton, Illinois-Chicago, Iowa, Memphis, Missouri, Providence and Vanderbilt, along with interest from Illinois, Indiana and Michigan State, and the Lakers (17-2) get back into action at 7:30 p.m. this Friday at home against New Faith Christian Academy out of Ellenwood, Ga.
