Weekend Wrap: Miller, Bishop Dunne move on

Each week during the football season, Illinois football beat writer Matt Daniels will recap how commits and targets for Tim Beckman’s program fared during the previous weekend’s worth of games.

The commits
DESMOND CAIN, a senior cornerback at Delray Beach (Fla.) American Heritage who committed to Illinois on Nov. 4, and the Stallions won 23-7 at Miami Westminster Christian last Friday night in a Class 3A regional final playoff game. Cain and the Stallions (10-1) will now play at 6:30 p.m. this Friday in a 3A state semifinal playoff game at Clearwater (Fla.) Central Catholic.

HENRY ENYENIHI, a sophomore running back at Sacramento (Calif.) City College who committed to Illinois on July 3, and the Panthers won 41-35 in overtime at Diablo Valley (Calif.) College last Saturday to win the East Bay Bowl. Enyenihi struggled, compiling negative 9 rushing yards on 8 carries in the season-ending win for the Panthers. Enyenihi helped Sacramento City College finish the year 7-4 as he rushed for a team-high 470 yards on 109 carries and two touchdowns while adding 10 receptions for 51 yards this fall.

ZACH HEATH, a sophomore offensive lineman at American River (Calif.) College who committed to Illinois on July 1, and the Beavers beat Butte (Calif.) College 20-17 on Saturday in Sacramento, Calif., to win the Gridiron Classic Bowl. Heath has missed most of the season since sustaining a season-ending torn labrum in the Beavers’ season opener. The Beavers (10-1) are set to play at 3 p.m. this Saturday at City College of San Francisco in a California Community College regional final playoff game.

A.D. MILLER, a senior wide receiver at Dallas Bishop Dunne who committed to Illinois on July 5, and the Falcons opened the Division I Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools playoffs with a 41-14 second-round win at home against Midland (Texas) Christian last Friday night. Miller recorded eight receptions for 77 yards in the win. Miller and the Falcons (10-1) will square off against San Antonio Antonian College Prep this weekend in the state semifinals.

The targets
DORANCE ARMSTRONG, a senior defensive end at Galena Park (Texas) North Shore High School, and the Mustangs beat Clear Springs (Texas) 45-20 in a Class 6A Division I second-round playoff game last Friday night at home. Armstrong, who has offers from California, Houston, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa State, Kansas, Memphis, Michigan State, Northwestern, Oregon State and Purdue, and the Mustangs (8-4) will play Cyrpress (Texas) Ranch at 2 p.m. this Friday in a 6A Division I regional semifinal playoff game at TDECU Stadium on the University of Houston campus.

TRENARD DAVIS, a senior athlete at Delray Beach (Fla.) American Heritage School, and the Stallions won 23-7 at Miami Westminster Christian School last Friday night in a Class 3A regional final playoff game. Davis rushed for two touchdowns in the win. Davis, who has offers from Florida Atlantic, Illinois, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, South Florida, SMU and Temple, and the Stallions (10-1) will tangle at 6:30 p.m. this Friday in a 3A state semifinal playoff game at Clearwater (Fla.) Central Catholic.

CHRIS HART, a senior linebacker at Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas, and the Raiders beat Plantation (Fla.) 38-6 at home last Friday night in a Class 7A regional semifinal playoff game. Hart, who has offers from Boston College, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Florida Atlantic, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisville, Massachusetts, Michigan State, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Syracuse, Western Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Raiders (11-1) will host Royal Palm Beach (Fla.) in a 7A regional final playoff game at 6:30 p.m. this Friday.

DONTA THOMPSON, a senior wide receiver at Ennis (Texas) High School, and the Lions beat Mansfield (Texas) Timberview 17-13 last Friday night in a Class 5A Division II second-round playoff game at Vernon Newson Stadium in Mansfield. Thompson did not record a catch in the win. Thompson, who has offers from Arkansas State, Colorado, Illinois, New Mexico, Purdue, Texas Tech, Texas State, Texas San Antonio and Texas El Paso, and the Lions (10-2) are slated to play The Colony (Texas) at 7 p.m. this Friday at Waxahachie (Texas) in a 5A Division II regional semifinal playoff game.
