With Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie courtside, Verdell Jones scored 16 points as Central held on to beat Mt. Vernon 44-37 in a slow-down super-sectional. The Maroons will face two-time defending champion Chicago Simeon at 1:45 p.m. Friday.Mt. Vernon went into delay offense for the first 30 minutes of the game, testing Central's patience. But the Maroons got an early lead and survived, hitting clutch free throws in the last two minutes.

The pace and the atmosphere at a half-empty Prairie Capital Convention Center were a stark contrast to Friday night's emotional win against top-ranked Decatur Eisenhower.
The postgame celebration was minimal as fans were held off the court, and the nets stayed on the rims.
