Ron Guenther's two-year contract extension and raise are expected to be finalized when the University of Illinois Board of Trustees meet Wednesday.
The move will keep Guenther, the UI's athletic director since 1992, at the school through Jan. 1, 2011. His annual salary will increase from $525,000 to $600,000 effective Aug. 16, with possible adjustments in 2009 and 2010. Guenther also will receive an incentive bonus of $100,000 if he stays on the job through Dec. 31, 2010.

In 2006, Guenther received an extension through Jan. 1, 2009, that included a $250,000 payment should he stay through Dec. 31, 2008.

Well, the administrators of the U of I got something right. If there is any one man who has been responsible for the recent upswing in Illini athletics--i is without a doubt Coach Ron Guenther. From making the coaches he hires sign an agreement with him that they will not cheat---- EVER, to his major role in fund-raising, and finally from his almost uncanny ability to pick the right coach to coach our various teams..... like--Coach Zook, and Coach Weber, even the biggest detractors of the U of I would have to say that he has done a fantastic job of guiding the growth, the ethics and the competitiveness of Illini Athletics. Congratulations Coach Guenther on your new contract. It is my fervent hope that you remain the AD here as long as you wish... and that your wish would be for a very long---LONG time.
