Here's the Champaign Police Department news release concerning Jamar Smith, who as of 3:30 p.m. is listed in on the UI Web site as a member of the basketball team :
On July 25, 2008, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Champaign police officers were dispatched to the 300 block of E. Green Street for a report of criminal damage to a local business. Moments later, officers reported a verbal altercation occurring at the intersection of Fourth and Green Street, where 21 year-old JAMAR SMITH was located amongst a crowd of people. Upon arrival, officers ordered the group, including JAMAR SMITH to clear the area in order to prevent further altercations. Allegedly, JAMAR SMITH, along with several other males left the area, but continued to return to there several times. While being warned by the officer a third time, police noticed a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from JAMAR SMITH. The officer recalled his probationary status ordering him to refrain from the use of alcohol.
Because of the contact, a report was written and forwarded to the Champaign County Probation Department and the State’s Attorney’s Office for further review of a probable probation violation.
On July 29, 2008, the State’s Attorney’s Office issued an arrest warrant for JAMAR SMITH for Violation of Probation. Subsequently, JAMAR SMITH turned himself in to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office on today and posted bond for $2500. For further information regarding the issued warrant, please contact the State’s Attorney’s Office.

Where's the proof? He said she said. Breathalyzer? Blood test? This cop could be an Iowa fan with a vendetta.

Since it was an altercation, couldn't it had been someone threw alcohol on him? Been known to happen and would explain the odor on him.

How does the original sentence compare to similar cases in Champaign County? I've read various opinions that this case was vigourously prosecuted by the states attorney for political reasons.

The cop recognized him and 'recalled' his probationary status? Are you kidding me? If he was acting inappopriately he would have been taken in for it and they would have realized his status when they processed him. The way this went down sounds very fishy to me. How about an investigation into the police department, News-Gazette???

How do you spell the word "idiot"? If I was on probation for an alcohol violation, the last place I would want to be is a bar. As much as I want Jamar to be a success, I'm afraid he hasn't learned his lesson and is bound to self destruct. It's a shame! He has thrown a possible NBA career in the trash with the empty beer cans.
