Some programming notes for The News-Gazette and IlliniHQ.com:
— Hope you got your hands on last week’s special sections devoted to college and high school football. They’re always a lot of fun to put together. If you missed it, call me at 217-351-5231 and I’ll make sure you get a copy.
We have another one coming out in Saturday’s N-G, a 44-page ode to the renovation project at Memorial Stadium (right). The booklet — which every ticket-holder also will receive when entering the stadium Saturday — includes a bevy of classic pictures, both of the stadium when it was first built and the players who starred on the field.
— Congratulations to Bob Asmussen, whose story on the UI’s Rose Bowl berth won awards in two state contests, including first place in the Illinois Associated Press Editors Association judging. Our football beat writer also played a key role in our Web site’s coverage of the Rose Bowl, which also was recognized.
Our college basketball beat writer, Paul Klee, also bagged a first-place award in the IAPEA contest for his compelling story on an AAU basketball team from Champaign-Urbana.
Jeff Huth’s story on minor league baseball coming to C-U was a third-place finisher.
They’ll be honored at an Oct. 9 ceremony in Springfield.
— It’s easy finding prep sports coordinator Fred Kroner these days. Each Friday, Kroner will be at an area football game in which he’ll set aside time to meet and greet our readers (the complete schedule is on an ad that runs regularly in the N-G). This Friday, for example, he’ll be at Bismarck-Henning for its game against Villa Grove.
If that’s not enough, Kroner is joining our growing online chat lineup. At 12:30 p.m. every Thursday, he’ll take your questions at www.news-gazette.com in what will be our first high school chat. Ask him about his weekly predictions (he went 9-1 in Week 1, picking Danville to upset Bloomington).
— Speaking of chats, I’m pleased to report that Jim Turpin and Loren Tate did not come to blows during their first combined effort last Monday. They had so much fun they’re going to chat again at 11 a.m. Monday at IlliniHQ.com. Labor day, indeed.
— A reminder that we have tickets to the Eastern Illinois-
Illinois game to give away. Head to IlliniHQ.com and click away.
