Cardinal back at it

For a change, Brian Cardinal is looking forward to the rigors of an NBA training camp.
If only for a good night's sleep.
"Obviously, it's a little crazy around here," Cardinal said Friday from his home in northern Indiana, where he's helping his wife take care of their two kids: a 22-month-old boy and a 1-month-old girl. "We're back to waking up in the wee hours of the morning and trying to figure out why she's mad and not having a clue about what to do.
"Hey, it's going to make training camp easier."
Cardinal leaves next week for Mankato, Minn., the preseason home of the Minnesota Timberwolves. The former Unity High and Purdue star is entering his ninth season in the NBA with his fifth different team.
Will it be his last?
"I'm considered old," the 31-year-old Cardinal said. "There are definitely guys who can run a little faster and do things better than I can, but I still think I can compete in this league. It remains to be seen. I just hope my old bones and joints don't fail me."
Cardinal has two years left on a contract he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2004. He's unsure of how he'll fit in with the Timberwolves, who acquired him in a draft-day trade with the Grizzlies that included the rights to UCLA's Kevin Love.
He's also unsure of his role when his NBA career ends. Peers are quick to point out that his playing style - hustle and grit - translates well into coaching.
"I don't know about that," he said. "Coaching is tough, a lot of wear and tear on yourself and your family. I'm just looking forward to taking a year or two off and spending it with my wife and kids."
Even if, say, Purdue calls looking for an assistant?
"If the right opportunity presents itself, then maybe," Cardinal said. "Let's hope the right opportunity doesn't present itself so I don't have a choice to make."
