Saturday is National Trails Day. Celebrate by running a trail race.
— Run the inaugural Douglas-Hart Nature Center Prairie Loop Run Saturday in Mattoon. There’s a 3-mile run and 1-mile fun run on a chipped limestone trail in the nature center. The fun run is at 8:30 a.m. and the 3-mile run at 9:15 a.m. You can find a registration form at www.dhnature.org, or call 217/235-4644 for information.
— For a more rugged trail, try the Lake Mingo Trail Run next weekend. The 7.1-mile run at Kennekuk Cove County Park starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 12 and covers hilly trails surrounding Lake Mingo. For information or a registration form, go to www.kennekuk.com, click on “Events/Results” at the top of the page, and then on “Lake Mingo” on the left side.
— Or venture south for the Crossroads Dash 15K and 5K run/walk in Effingham. The event is at 8 a.m. Saturday, and you can register the day of the race beginning at 6:30 a.m. Link to a registration form here. Call 217/342-4147 for more information.
— If you’d rather get your exercise on two wheels and at a leisurely place, sign up for the Art Gallery Bicycle Tour on Saturday. The tour begins at Meadowbrook Park and riders can tour participating art galleries and get discounts at several local restaurants. They’re also eligible for raffle prizes. For more information or to get a registration form, go to http://champaigncycle.com and click on the logo for the ride. The entry fees will be donated to the 40 North/88 West arts organization.
— Another cycling opportunity — The Ogden Lions Club Benefit Bike Ride on June 12. The ride benefits Camp Lions, a summer camp for visually impaired young people. It begins and ends in downtown Ogden, and there are 12-, 32- and 62-mile routes. For more information, to register online or to download a brochure, go to http://e-clubhouse.org/sites/ogdenil/ and click on the link for the bike ride. Or call Bill Gillespie at 621-9943, or e-mail at LionE1Z3@aol.com.
— Also on June 12 you can choose from three different 20-mile cycling routes, or do all three, at Wheelin’ Around the Lake, the McLean County Wheelers Spring Metric ride. The ride is in Comlara Park, about eight miles north of Normal. Check out the Wheelers’ website at www.mcleancountywheelers.com/ for more information.
— The McLean County Wheelers also put on the Tour deWitt, which is part of Clinton’s 175th birthday celebration weekend this year. The ride is June 19, starting at Clinton’s downtown square. Riders can choose from 25-, 35- and 67-mile routes, and there are also two shorter routes for kids. Go to www.mcleancountywheelers.com/ for information and to download a registration brochure.
— One of my favorite races is coming up in two weeks. The Steamboat Classic in Peoria on June 19 features a 4-mile race, a 15K, and — new this year — a 4K fun run for kids younger than high school age and for runners with disabilities. The 15K is hilly and features two loops through Glen Oak Park, then a nice downhill to the finish at the Riverfront. For more information, check out the race website at www.steamboatclassic.org/sboat/.
— Closer to home, there’s the Tanger Fit for Families 5K run and walk at the Tanger Outlet Center in Tuscola on June 20. Proceeds benefit the Mills Breast Cancer Institute at Carle Clinic.
If you know of an event you’d like to see included in the Fit List, please e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
