The Fit List

There are a lot of opportunties for you to run or ride with Dad this weekend.

You can team up for a biathlon relay in Newman on Saturday.

The Newman Freedom Festival includes a 5K run and walk, and a biathlon with a 5K run and 12-mile bike ride. You can do the biathlon events as an individual, or team up with Dad or another athlete to do it as a relay.

The races start at 7:30 a.m. in Newman Park. You can register on race day, between 6:15 and 7:15 a.m. Registration fees are $27 for the 5K, $32 for the biathlon, and $43 for biathlon relay teams.

Also this weekend:

— Tour deWitt.
Saturday’s ride, put on by the McLean County Wheelers, is part of Clinton’s 175th birthday celebration weekend. There are 25-, 35-, and 67-mile routes. For more information, go to the Wheeler’s website at

— Steamboat Classic.
Run a 15K or a 4-mile run on Saturday. This year there’s also a 4K run for kids younger than high school age and for runners with disabilities. For more information, check out the race website at

— Tanger Fit for Families 5K.
This 5K run and walk is at the Tanger Outlet Center in Tuscola on Sunday. Proceeds benefit the Mills Breast Cancer Institute at Carle Clinic. Here’s the website for the race:

Looking ahead to the weekend of June 26-27, there are a couple of races and a ride to check out that Saturday.

— The Kracker Klassic returns.
Tolono’s Fun Day on June 26 will once again include the Kracker Klassic 5K run and walk, as well as a 1-mil fun run/walk and a 1/4-mile kids race. The kids race starts at 7:15 a.m., the 1-miler at 7:30 and the 5K at 7:45.
If you get your registration in by Saturday, you’ll save 5 bucks. Here’s a link to the race form.

— Shamrock Race to the Cross.
There aren’t all that many 10K races around anymore, much to my dismay. I really like 10Ks.
If you’re looking for one, you can head south to Effingham on Saturday, June 26, for this race. It includes a 10K, 5K and 1-mile fun run.
The races are sponsored by Sacred Heart School and benefit the school’s booster club. For the race flyer, go to and click on “Race to the Cross” at the top of the page.

— Daycation Museum Bicycle Tour Series kicks off.
Peter Davis at Champaign Cycle has organized a series of bike rides to area museums on the last Saturday of the month during the summer. The first is a June 26 ride to the Ship Model Museum in Sadorus.
All the rides start at 9 a.m. at Countryside School at the corner of Kirby and Staley in southwest Champaign. There is no charge for the ride, but riders will have to pay the museum admission fees ($5 for the Ship Model Museum).
Go to and click on “2010 Staycation Museum Bike Tour Series” for more information. You should e-mail Davis at if you plan to ride one of the tours, so the museums will know how many people to expect.

There are several Fourth of July races coming up. More details on them next week, but they include: the Rocking the Runway Firecracker Bash 5K run in Rantoul on the evening of July 2; the Freedom 5K in Champaign on July 4; the Knights of Columbus 5K and 1-miler in Paxton on July 4; and the Lovington is on the Move 5K in Lovington on July 4.
