The Labor Day weekend festival races are coming!
Join me in my hometown for Arthur’s 5K Rat Race. It’s really flat, and you’ll get a hunk of cheese after the race.
The 5K is part of Arthur’s Cheese Festival during Labor Day weekend. The race is on Labor Day, Sept. 6.
There’s a 1-mile fun run starting at 8 a.m., a 5K walk at 8:15 a.m., and the 5K run starting at 8:30 a.m. My daughter will be doing the kiddie fun run at 9:30 a.m., where the kids chase costumed characters — a rat and a piece of cheese — down the street. You don’t want to miss that.
The big door prize is a drawing for $100. I won it a few years ago (and I swear the drawing wasn’t rigged, even though I’m a hometown girl).
Here’s a link to the website for more information. There’s a link for the entry form about halfway down the page. Register by Sept. 1 and save $5.
Here’s what’s coming this weekend, and in the next couple of weeks:
Weekend of Aug. 28-29:
— Daycation Museum Bicycle Tour
This is the third and last ride in this summer bicycle tour series. This ride on Saturday is to the Early American Museum in Mahomet to see its Lincoln exhibit. The ride leaves from Countryside School at Staley Road and Kirby Avenue at 9 a.m.
There’s no charge for the ride or for admission to the museum. For more information, go to http://champaigncycle.com and click on “2010 Daycation Museum Bike Tour Series.”
— Peace to Meece 5K
This 5K run is on Saturday at 8 a.m. on the Eastern Illinois University cross-country course. It’s in memory of Ryan Meece, an EIU cross-country runner between 1993 and 1998. He died in 2009.
The race benefits the “Peace to Meece” organization, which provides scholarships to EIU cross-country athletes and supports other philanthropic causes.
There’s also a kids’ fun run. For more information, go to www.peacetomeece.com.
— Staci’s Country Miles 5K
Another 5K run and walk on Saturday. This one, in Royal, benefits Prairieview-Ogden North school. Registration on race day is at 6:30 a.m., with the race starting at 7 a.m. You can register here at active.com.

Weekend of Sept. 11-12:
— F.A.S.T. 5K
This is the second year for this race, which will be Sept. 11 at Crystal Lake Park. F.A.S.T. stands for “Friends And Survivors Together,” and the race benefits the Rape Advocacy Counseling & Education Services organization, which serves Champaign, Piatt, Douglas and Ford counties.
The race is at 9 a.m., and you can register on race day from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. If you register before Aug. 31, you save $5 on your entry fee.
The race allows strollers on the course, but they must start behind all runners and walkers and they cannot enter the finish chute.
For more information and for an entry form, go to www.cu-races.org and click on the “FAST 5K” tab at the top right. Call (217) 344-6298 with questions.

Also, I found an entry form for the race at Body n’ Sole Sports in Savoy.
