This Saturday is the Women’s Fitness 5K race at Crystal Lake Park.
It’s a women-only race that’s been around for 25 years now.
For the first time ever, two men registered for the race this year.
Race Director Jan Seeley said she contacted one of the entrants, who registered online and didn’t realize it was a women’s race. He’s getting a refund.
She hadn’t reached the other guy as of Tuesday afternoon. Seeley said he’d signed up with a female friend.
While the race brochure doesn’t specifically say the race is limited to women, with a name like “Women’s Fitness Run,” most people figure it out.
“Given that this is first time in 25 years (with a male entrant), I think most people know it’s just for women,” Seeley said. “I haven’t had anybody ever make a stink.”
But apparently some men enter women’s races to better their chances of winning, or support a wife or girlfriend. Or to try and get a phone number.
The Wall Street Journal ran this front-page story today about guys who crash women’s road races.
If you’re a man looking to be involved with a road race this weekend in Champaign-Urbana, Seeley will welcome you — as a race volunteer.
