The Fit List

Enjoy your holiday weekend and run a memorial 5K. There’s a Navy memorial race in Decatur and a 5K in Danville benefiting veterans’ care. Or, if you’re into multi-sport events, there’s a triathlon in Mattoon and a biathlon in Springfield.
Here’s the list.

Weekend of May 28-30:
— Navy Memorial 5K
This is a 5K run and walk on Saturday at the Sail Fish Club in Nelson Park in Decatur.
The event begins with a color guard ceremony at 7:45 a.m., and the race start is at 8:15 a.m.
The proceeds from the race help pay for the Navy Ball.

— Memorial Day 5K
This race is at 9 a.m. on Monday (Memorial Day) on the grounds of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Danville. There’s a 5K run and a non-competitive 5K walk, and the race benefits the Veterans Centered Care Initiative.
The deadline for pre-registration is May 23, and if you pre-register, the race entry fee is just $5. After May 23 and on race day, the entry fee is $15.

— Lytle Park Triathlon
This triathlon in Mattoon is at 8 a.m. Monday. Distances are: a 300-meter swim in the Lytle Park Pool, a 12.5-mile out-and-back bike ride, and a 3-mile out-and-back run.
In addition to individual entrants, you may also participate on two-person or three-person relay teams.

— Capital City Biathlon
This race, at the Lake Springfield Beach House, is at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. It’s a 5K run, followed by a 15-mile bike ride. You can register on race day starting at 6 a.m.
The race promotes Habitat for Humanity.

Weekend of June 4-5:
— Countryside 10K
This first-time event is a 10K run and 2-mile walk put on by the Champaign County Farm Bureau Foundation. It’s at Witt Park in Sidney on Saturday, June 4, at 8 a.m. The race helps support scholarships for students studying agriculture.
The race is on country roads near Sidney. The age group awards are cowbells, and the post-race food will include the Sidney Dairy Barn Moo Mobile.

— Prairie Loop
This is a 3-mile run and 1-mile fun run at the Douglas-Hart Nature Center in Mattoon on Saturday, June 4. The fun run is at 8:30 a.m. and the 3-mile run is at 9:15 a.m. The runs are on chipped limestone paths through woods and prairie.

— Tammy Walsh Scholarship and Memorial 5K
This is a 5K run and walk in St. Joseph held in memory of Tammy Walsh, a St. Joseph-Ogden High School cheerleading coach who was killed at her son’s football game in August 2010.
The run benefits the Tammy Walsh Scholarship and Memorial Fund, which provides scholarships to St. Joseph-Ogden High School seniors. It will also help pay for a new play clock for the football field this year.
The race is at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at Kolb Park in St. Joseph. Race registration begins at 7 a.m. The rain date is June 11. The race is a family event and strollers are welcome.

— Champion Chase
This is a 5K run and walk and kids’ run in Bloomington on Sunday, June 5, to benefit the Children’s Hospital of Illinois. The fun run is at 11 a.m. and the 5K is at 11:30 a.m.
There will be kid-friendly activities following the race, including bounce houses and face painting.

Weekend of June 11-12:
— Lake Mingo Trail Run
This hilly trail run is one of the Kennekuk Road Runners’ four main events. It’s at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, at Kennekuk Cove County Park.
If you postmark your entry by today (Friday), you’ll save some money on the entry fee.

— Bement’s Old Glory Days 5K Run/Walk
This race is at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at the Historic Bryant Cottage, and it’s part of Bement’s Old Glory Days Festival.
You’ll save a few dollars if you register before May 31. There’s also race day registration is from 7 to 7:45 a.m.

— Wheelin’ Around the Lake
This is the McLean County Wheelers Spring Metric, at Comlara Park in Hudson on Saturday, June 11.
Cyclists can start anytime between 6:30 and 10:30 a.m., and choose from a 20-, 40- or 60-mile route, or a new family route. The course consists of three 20-mile loops, all of which begin and end in Comlara Park. There’s a post-ride meal, served from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

— Peoria Chiefs 4 Mile Run/1 Mile Walk
This race is at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 12, at O’Brien Field in Peoria, the ballpark of the Peoria Chiefs minor league baseball team. The race begins outside the ballpark and finishes in the stadium, near first base.
The event this year benefits the Illinois Military Family Relief Fund, which provides grants to families of Illinois National Guard members and reservists called to duty after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The registration fee for the race includes entry to the Peoria Chiefs ballgame on June 12. If you register by June 1, you’ll save $5. You can also register on race day, beginning at 6:45 a.m.
