If you aren’t signed up to do the Champaign Park District’s Mini-Tri on Saturday, come out and cheer on the participants. The swim gets started at 7:30 a.m. at Sholem Aquatic Center, and you can watch folks bike and run around Centennial Park.

Weekend of August 6-7:

— Run for Raley

This is a 5K run, a 1-mile walk and a kids fun run on Saturday in Philo. The race is in memory of Raley Lynn Kirby, who died in 2008 at seven weeks old of a mitochondrial disorder. The race benefits the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation. This year the race is affiliated with the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon. The races begin at 8 a.m., and race day registration is from 7 to 7:45 a.m. For more information or to register, go to

— Tom Short 5K Trail Run

This race is at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Shelbyville Aquatic Center in Forest Park, Shelbyville. It’s a 5K run and 1-mile fun run/walk on an oil and chip trail. Runners can enter a team competition, with five-person teams. Proceeds from the race will be used to construct and maintain the General Dacey Trail in Shelbyville. Runners and their families will be able to use the pool at the Shelbyville Aquatic Center from 9 to 11 a.m. on race day. Race day registration is from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. Here’s a link to the race form.

— Central Illinois Open Water Swim

This is on my list of events for next year. It’s a sanctioned master’s swimming event at Evergreen Lake at Comlara County Park, near Hudson. The swims are on Saturday, and there are two swim distances — 1.2 miles and 2.4 miles. The races start at 10 a.m. Check-in is from 8 to 9:30 a.m. There is no race day registration. — Decatur Celebration Family Fun Run/Walk

This is a non-competitive 1-mile fun run or walk at 9 a.m. Saturday. It follows the Decatur Celebration parade route. Check-in is from 8 to 8:45 a.m., and participants get to sit in a special viewing section for the parade following the run/walk. The run/walk is sponsored by the Obesity Prevention Coalition. — Goodenow Insurance Agency Park Series 5K

This is the third of three 5Ks in Springfield’s Park Series of summer races. This race is at 8 a.m. Saturday at Lincoln Park. The proceeds from this race will go to Homes for Our Troops, which provides accessible homes for wounded veterans. Previous races benefited the American Cancer Society for research on pancreatic cancer, and the Relevant Practical Ministry for Men. Weekend of August 13-14:

— C-U Across the Prairie

This is the Prairie Cycle Club’s annual ride, on Saturday, Aug. 13. The ride begins and ends at the Lake of the Woods Pavilion in Mahomet, and riders can choose from 18-, 38- and 62-mile routes. You’ll get a bagel breakfast, food stops along the way, and a post-ride lunch. Check-in for the ride and day-of-ride registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 10 a.m. Food stops close at 1:30 p.m., and sag support and lunch end at 2:30 p.m. Here’s a link for more information and to register online.

— SJO 5K

This is a 5K run/walk and a 1K kids fun run in St. Joseph on Saturday, Aug. 13. The 5K starts at 7:30 a.m. and the kids run at 8:30 a.m. This race is a fundraiser for the St. Joseph middle school and St. Joseph-Ogden high school cross country programs. It’s also run in conjunction with the St. Joseph Fall Festival. There is race day registration from 6 to 7 a.m. at the St. Joseph United Methodist Church. — Drummer Creek Dog Days 5K

This 5K run and 2-mile walk is on Saturday, Aug. 13, in Gibson City. Proceeds from the race will go to Ford County Relay for Life. The races start at 7:30 a.m. and there is race day registration 6 to 7 a.m. Here’s the race flier.

— Evergreen Lake 5K

This is a Lake Run Club event on Saturday, Aug. 13, at Evergreen Lake in Comlara County Park, near Hudson. It benefits the McLean County Parks and Recreation and the YMCA Strong Kids campaign. There is a 5K race and a kids 1/2-mile fun run, starting at 8 a.m. For the registration form, click here, then click on the link for the “Evergreen 5K” form.

— Cruisin’ the Cornfields

This is the Sullivan Area Arts bicycle tour through rural Moultrie County on Saturday, Aug. 13. There are 16-, 41- and 66-mile routes. The rides start at Wyman Park in Sullivan and include a rest stop at Okaw Valley Orchard. Registration is from 7 to 9 a.m. Riders doing the 41- and 66-mile routes should start by 8 a.m. Sag support ends at 3 p.m. The ride benefits the Sullivan Area Arts organization. — Abraham Lincoln Triathlon Series

These events on Saturday, Aug. 13, include the Stovepipe Sprint Triathlon and the Railsplitter Triathlon, at Lake Petersburg and Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site. The Stovepipe Sprint is a 500-yard swim, a 13-mile bike ride and a 5K run, and it starts at 7:30 a.m.. The Railsplitter is a 1-mile swim, a 36-mile bike ride and a 7-mile run, and it starts at 7 a.m. You can register for either online until Aug. 12. Here’s a link for more information and to register. There is camping available at the New Salem State Historic Site and at Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Park, which is on the Railsplitter bike course.
