The Starting Line (December 2011)
Here’s the rundown on New Year’s Eve races, and a few for upcoming weekends.
New Year’s Eve:
— Body N’ Sole Sports New Year’s Eve Fun Run
This is Body N’ Sole’s 13th year hosting a New Year’s Eve run. The run is three miles through Savoy. It starts at 4 p.m. at their store, 1317 Dunlap Ave., Savoy.
The Top 10 list is a standard feature of year’s end, along with champagne and funny hats. Top 10 movies of the year. Top 10 news stories.
It’s no different at The Starting Line, except that I’m looking forward, rather than back, to tell you the Top 10 races you must run in 2012.
Not so many races this time of year, so The Fit List will appear sporadically during the winter months. There’s are several New Year’s Eve races to consider, and the Siberian Express in January.
I’ll be breaking out the Santa hat and string of battery-powered lights for an annual Christmas lights run to celebrate a friend’s birthday this weekend. Happy Holidays.
New Year’s Eve:
Thinking about curling up with hot cocoa and a good book? (After your workout, of course.) Or do you need a gift for an athlete in your life? I asked some area athletes about their favorite books in their sports. Here are their recommendations:
— Letitia Moffitt is a marathon runner and Eastern Illinois University professor, teaching literature and creative writing.
A new film on the Western States 100 race — “Unbreakable: The Western States 100” — will be screened tonight at The Vineyard Church in Urbana.
The Western States 100 is a 100-mile ultramarathon in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. The film follows the four top male runners in the 2010 race.
Hey, it’s December and still supposed to reach into the low 50s this weekend. Get out there and race!
Weekend of Dec. 3-4:
— Tuscola 5K Santa Chase
This 5K run and walk is Saturday in Tuscola. You can register on race day from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. Here’s a link to the entry form.
