The Starting Line (January 2012)
Rob Kanter had already decided to run the full marathon at the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon this year, after completing the half-marathon in 2011.
Then he got an added incentive.
Prairie Rivers Network, an organization for which he’s a member and volunteer, is now affiliated with the Illinois Marathon as one of its eight official charities.
Champaign-Urbana isn’t the only central Illinois community experiencing a running boom these days.
The number of runners in Decatur, and participation in training programs and races, has been increasing in the last several years.
You’ve got options this weekend — outdoors or indoors. If you’re OK with running in the cold, get to the Carle Resolution Run. If you’d rather exercise in a warmer environment, check out the Champaign Park District’s walk and fitness fair at Market Place Mall.
Here’s the (short) list of happenings.
Weekend of Jan. 14-15:
— Carle Resolution Run
I wrote a column published earlier this week about skiing. My husband and I got back on downhill skis after a long hiatus, and our daughter tried out snowboarding for the first time.
I included a short list of several Midwest ski resorts that offer skiing and snowboarding lessons for children.
We may be living in the flatlands, and so far this winter, we’re experiencing way too little snow to suit me. Doesn’t matter. This time of year, I’m thinking skiing.
It’s been almost nine years — or prechild — since I was last on downhill skis. And I’ve been wanting to get my daughter on skis for several years now.
