When Lisa Krause first began running in the spring of 2010, she couldn’t even run one block.
One year later, in April 2011, she’d lost 65 pounds and she ran a half-marathon.
She’d never been a runner but decided to become one when “I hit a certain number on the scale and knew it was time to do something,” Krause said.
Not long after Duane Schlabach began running, he started keeping track of his miles in running log books.
He'd add up the weekly totals as he went along, and he got hooked on setting a yearly goal – often 1,000 miles – and trying to meet it.
After a few years, he began adding his yearly mileage totals together and recording his “career miles” each year.
Runners preparing for one of the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon races this spring can hear information to help them in their training at the Christie Foundation’s Runner Symposium.
The symposium is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Christie on Windsor, 1801 W. Windsor Road, Champaign.
So far, 2012 has been the year of trying new things.
I’ve wanted to try a cycling or spinning class for some time but always felt a little intimidated. I’ve been going once a week for a little over a month now, and I’m loving it.
I also took some ice skating lessons, and I can now stop without crashing into the boards.
This week, though, I’m returning to yoga class.
