Run for the Fallen

Run for the Fallen

This run/walk didn’t make it into The Fit List last Friday, but it’s coming up this weekend. If you’d like to honor military men and women from Illinois who died in Afghanistan and Iraq, head to Charleston on Saturday.

Run/Walk for the Fallen
This run/walk is Saturday, Aug. 18, at Charleston High School. People are invited to run or walk a mile in memory of one of the more than 240 Illinois residents who died serving their country in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Each runner or walker will get a card with a photo and biographical information about an Illinois resident who died in the wars in those countries. Those who want to run or walk for a specific soldier can indicate that on the event’s waiver form.
The event is part of a national “Run for the Fallen” program.
The run/walk is free and goes from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Charleston High School track. Participants may run or walk their mile at any time during the event.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1592 Ladies Auxiliary is providing small American flags to place in the end zone in memory of the fallen service members. The Mattoon High School JROTC drill team will
perform and the Charleston VFW Post 1592 Honor Guard will conduct a service in honor.
This is the third year of the event. More than 600 people participated in last year’s run/walk.
The organizers of the event are collecting supplies, such as cards, toiletries, non-perishable food items and drink packets, to send to troops overseas.
