The Fit List

Good luck to everyone running the Chicago Marathon this weekend! If you want a shorter and more local race, check out the list.

Weekend of Oct. 6-7:
Wooly Worm 5K
This is a 5K and a family fun run/walk on Saturday in Camargo. The race benefits the Playtime Cooperative Nursery School. You can register on race day beginning at 6 a.m.

Run 4 Justice
This is a 5K run and walk on Saturday in Crystal Lake Park. It’s sponsored by Service and Justice Outreach of the Newman Center on the UI campus.

Last Chance Tri
This race is the afternoon of Sunday in Mattoon. It consists of a 275-yard pool swim, a 12-mile bike and a 3-mile run. There is race day registration.

Mackinaw Valley Meet in the Middle Ride
This ride on Saturday is on the Mackinaw Valley Trail and it has two starting points, in Peoria and in Bloomington-Normal. The ride is approximately 18 miles one way from Peoria and 20 miles one way from Bloomington-Normal. Riders plan to meet for lunch in Mackinaw.

Run to End Alzheimer’s 5K
This race is Saturday at Fairview Park in Decatur. Proceeds from the race benefit the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Illinois Chapter.

Run the Woods
This is a 5K and an 8K race on Saturday at Lake Bloomington, followed by a pancake breakfast. The races benefit the Easter Seals and Timber Pointe Outdoor Center.

Town and Gown 5K
This race is Saturday during Illinois State University’s homecoming weekend.

UIS Homecoming 5K
This is a 5K run and walk on Saturday in conjunction with homecoming at the University of Illinois-Springfield. Here’s a link for more information.

Wildcat Run
This is a 5K run and walk and a kids’ fun run on Saturday at the Springfield Christian School. Click here for more information and to register.

Pumpkin Pie Ride
If there is pumpkin pie involved, it’s my kind of ride. This ride on Sunday is at Ottawa. You can choose from a mountain bike ride of either 21 or 32 miles along the I&M Canal Towpath, or road rides of 28, 42, 63 and 103 miles. The 21-mile ride on the towpath and the 28-mile road ride both go to Utica, which is having its Burgoo Festival.
Most importantly, there is pumpkin pie.

5K Walk/Run for Lifelong Wellness
This is a first-time race hosted by Clark-Lindsey Village in Urbana on Saturday in its Masterpiece Gardens. Residents, employees, family and friends will run or walk to celebrate wellness. Several employees have been training for the run using the Couch-to-5K program.
Registration opens at 9 a.m. The run begins at 10 a.m. and the walk at 10:15 a.m., followed by a lunch at 11 a.m.

Weekend of Oct. 13-14:
Women’s Fitness 5K
This 5K run and walk is Sunday, Oct. 14, at Crystal Lake Park in Urbana. The race benefits the Center for Women in Transition and the Crisis Nursery. In addition to the run and walk, there is a kids’ dash.
Racers are asked to donate an item to the Center for Women in Transition or the Crisis Nursery.

Miles of Hope 5K
This is a 5K run and a 2-mile family walk at Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve on Saturday, Oct. 13. Proceeds from the race will support research for finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

YWCA Race Against Racism
This race is a 5K run and walk on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Meadowbrook Park. Here’s a link to the race form, and here’s a link for online registration.

Kinesiology Student Association 5K
This 5K run/walk, sponsored by the University of Illinois Kinesiology Student Association, is Saturday, Oct. 14. The theme this year is running with your best buddy, whether it’s a friend, family member or pet.
The proceeds from the race will go to local organizations, including the Champaign County Humane Society and the Crisis Nursery. The race organizers are also collecting old running shoes for underprivileged runners in Africa, and pet food for the Champaign County Humane Society.

Midwest Believers 5K
This is a 5K run and walk and a 1-mile fun run/walk on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Crystal Lake Park. It is sponsored by Midwest Believers Church to benefit the Pregnancy Resource Center.

Sand Creek Trail Run
This event includes 4- and 7-mile runs at the Sand Creek Conservation Area near Decatur on Saturday, Oct. 13. Runners will be on a hiking and horse trail. Race proceeds benefit the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

Breast Cancer Awareness Ride
This ride on Saturday, Oct. 13, is sponsored by Champaign Cycle. It’s part of a series of rides at Trek retailers to raise money for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. All the registration fees are donated to that organization.
There are 12- and 25-mile rides, starting from Champaign Cycle, with refreshments and a raffle afterward. You can register online through Oct. 12 or at Champaign Cycle on the day of the event.

Cycling 4 Cancer Cures
This ride, also sponsored by Champaign Cycle, is Sunday, Oct. 14. It is the Fritz Miericke Depot Ride, in honor of a late employee of Champaign Cycle, and the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer program.
There are 35-. 65- and 100-mile routes. The 35- and 100-mile routes start at Champaign Cycle, and the 65-mile route at the White Heath community Center. There is a pancake breakfast at the community center for riders of all the distances.

Abe’s 5K Run and 1-Mile Memorial Walk
This race is Saturday, Oct. 13, at Abe’s Corn Maze in Springfield. The race benefits the IL COPS organization that aids the families of fallen police officers.
