The Starting Line (November 2012)
At this time of year, I start to imagine myself flying down a ski hill, or cross-country skiing through the woods or skating gracefully around an ice rink.
I am always far more graceful and athletic in my imagination than in reality. But I’m working on the reality of those sports.
Looking for a race this weekend or next? Here’s the list:
Weekend of Nov. 24-25:
— Stuff ‘N Puff
This 5K race is on Saturday in Sullivan. This year the race starts and ends at Sullivan High School, and race proceeds will benefit the Sullivan-Okaw Valley cross country program. There’s also a 1-mile fun run.
If you want to work off some Thanksgiving calories in advance, or afterward, there are plenty of oportunities to do so. There are Turkey Trots, a Santa Chase, a Jingle Bell Run, a Stuff ‘N Puff and a Gravel Grovel. Take your pick.
Here’s the list:
Weekend of Nov. 17-18:
— Run for the Library
The fastest runners at the Shoreline Classic 15K race in Decatur in mid-September — those running five-minute miles — were introduced and received their awards.
Then came the age group award winners. But it wasn’t until Don Pratt of Monticello was called forward for his third-place award in the 65 and older age group that the crowd stood and applauded.
I’m looking forward to the time change this weekend, so we have a little more light for morning runs.
Good luck to everyone running the Monumental Marathon and Half Marathon in Indianapolis this weekend. Lots of local runners heading east for that race. Special shoutout to my friend, John M., who is running his first marathon. Good luck, John!
