If you want to work off some Thanksgiving calories in advance, or afterward, there are plenty of oportunities to do so. There are Turkey Trots, a Santa Chase, a Jingle Bell Run, a Stuff ‘N Puff and a Gravel Grovel. Take your pick.
Here’s the list:
Weekend of Nov. 17-18:
— Run for the Library
This 5K run is on Saturday at Lake of the Woods in Mahomet. It benefits Mahomet Public Library programs and a Mahomet Rotary Club project to put a shelter at the Buffalo Trace trails at Lake of the Woods (which are very nice running trails, by the way).
For more information or for a link to register, go to http://mahometpubliclibrary.org/Run2012.
— Abe’s Trail Trek
This is an inaugural race on Saturday at the New Salem State Historic Site at Petersburg. It includes a 5K fun run/walk and 10K and 15K trail runs that the organizers say are some of the toughest in the area. I would definitely be doing the 15K if circumstances allowed it this weekend. Next year. The post-race soup, chili, hot drinks and bonfire sound very appealing!
The proceeds from the race will help maintain the historic site.

— Mattoon Santa Chase
This is a half marathon and a 5K run on Saturday in Mattoon. It is organized by the Mattoon Youth Wrestling Club.
Here’s a link for more information. Click on the Santa Chase link under the Main Menu on the left side of the page.
— Turkey Trot
This trot includes a 5K run, a 10K run and a 5K recreational walk in Fairview Park in Decatur on Saturday.
I’m not sure if this is the same race I ran in high school, but if so it was the first time I’d encountered hills, other than an interstate overpass, on a run. Not one of my more impressive performances. I did win a turkey though.
Here’s a link for more information, and here’s the race brochure.
— Jingle Bell Run
Springfield’s Jingle Bell Run for the Arthritis Foundation is Saturday at Lincoln Land Community College. There’s the option of a competitive and non-competitive 5K.
Go to this website for more details.
Thursday, Nov. 22:
— Urbana Park District Turkey Trot
Happy Thanksgiving! Make room for seconds by getting out and going for a run or walk before your Thanksgiving meal.
The Turkey Trot is a longtime tradition in Urbana. It’s at Crystal Lake Park at 9 a.m., and it’s very informal. No entry fee or advance registration required. But be sure to get yourself in the drawing for raffle prizes.
The trot is a 1-mile loop in Crystal Lake Park. Run it or walk it, or run it several times.
This year, the Urbana Park District is asking that you consider a donation to its scholarship fund that helps low-income kids go to summer camp.
Here’s the link on the park district’s website with information about the Turkey Trot.
— Bloomington Turkey Trot
If you’re spending Thanksgiving in Bloomington-Normal, they’ve got a Turkey Trot too. It’s also a free event, at Miller Park in Bloomington. There’s a 3-mile fun run and a 1.5-mile non-competitive walk, followed by a raffle.
Here’s a link for more information.
Weekend of Nov. 24-25:
— Stuff ‘N Puff
This 5K race is on Saturday, Nov. 24, in Sullivan. This year the race starts and ends at Sullivan High School, and race proceeds will benefit the Sullivan-Okaw Valley cross country program. There’s also a 1-mile fun run.
Click here for more information. There’s a link to the entry form at the top of the page.
— FOLEPI River Trail Classic
This is a 4-mile run and 2-mile non-competitive walk on Saturday, Nov. 24, in conjunction with the Festival of Lights in East Peoria. This is a point-to-point race, with buses taking racers to the start line.
Here’s a link to the race brochure.
— Gravel Grovel
This event is a cyclocross race on Saturday, Nov. 24, in Norman, Ind. Actually, the race is billed as a combination of road riding, cyclocross and mountain biking. The race website says the course is mostly gravel forest roads, plus some paved sections.
There’s a 100K race and a 25-mile fun ride. There’s free tent camping or cabins or bunkhouses to rent, and a post-race Creole meal.
Here’s the race website with more information.
