The Fit List

The Fit List is back from vacation, and the race calendar is filling up! Here’s what’s coming up in the next few weekends:

Weekend of March 30-31:
April Fools 5K
This race is Saturday at the University of Illinois Arboretum. The race is organized by the Kola Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps improve the lives of young people on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The race proceeds will be used for scholarships to bring young people to the UI for a summer research apprenticeship program.

Avicenna 5K
This 5K is on Saturday at Crystal Lake Park in Urbana. It supports the Avicenna Community Health Center, which provides free health care to the uninsured and at-risk populations.

Weekend of April 6-7:
Allerton Trails Half Marathon and 10K Race
This inaugural race at Robert Allerton Park near Monticello is Saturday, April 6. The half marathon will include trails on both sides of the Sangamon River and cross the newly-restored bridge over the river. Race proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
This race is also part of the new “Triple Crown” race series that will also include the Kirby Derby on May 11 and the Allerton Trail Run in late October.

Run Wild For Wildlife
This run at Homer Lake on Sunday, April 7, supports the Wildlife Medical Clinic at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. There are two race distances, a 6K and a 10-mile course, and both are mostly on trails.
Raptors from the medical clinic will be the course marshals at the race, and the medals for age group winners will feature footprints from the clinic’s avian patients.
Register by March 31 and get a discounted entry fee. Here’s a link for more information.

Amazing Bike Race
This Champaign Park District adventure race on Saturday, April 6, involves racing through Champaign by bike, solving clues and completing physical or mental challenges.
Formerly called Race the Greenspace, the Amazing Bike Race requires teams of two to four people to reach checkpoints and complete the challenges at each one. They must travel between checkpoints by bicycle only. The race is 8 to 10 miles, and participants must be at least 12 years old.
The race begins at Centennial Park. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishing teams, and the team with the best costumes.
The park district is offering a Parents’ Morning Out program for children whose parents are competing in the Amazing Bike Race. Kids will complete a mini adventure race course and do crafts at the Leonard Recreation Center.

Lincoln Presidential Half Marathon
Run through Lincoln history and get a giant penny finisher medal in this race on Saturday, April 6, in Springfield.
The race starts at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and goes past Lincoln’s home, the site of his law office, the Old State Capitol and through Oak Ridge Cemetery, where he is buried.

Illini Mentor Program 5K
This race is Saturday, April 6, and includes a run and a fun walk. It starts on the University of Illinois Quad. The Illini Mentor Program is a mentoring program for children at the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club and at Prairie Elementary School in Urbana.

HIV/AIDS Walk and Run
This 5K walk and run is Sunday, April 7, at the University of Illinois Arboretum. It is a fundraiser for the Greater Community AIDS Project of East Central Illinois.

Lake Sara Dam Run
This is an 8-mile run and a 5K run/walk on Saturday, April 6, at Lake Sara in Effingham. The races benefit the Special Olympics Illinois.

Westside 5K Run/Walk

Weekend of April 13-14:
Illinois Veterans Memorial 5K Run/Walk
The inaugural Illini Veterans Memorial 5K Run/Walk is Saturday, April 13 at the University of Illinois Arboretum. This race will support the planned Center for Wounded Veterans in Higher Education at the UI. The center is to provide comprehensive services for veterans with disabilities at the UI.

4-H Kids Helping Kids 5K
This 5K run/walk is on Saturday, April 13, at Crystal Lake Park in Urbana. It is sponsored by the Champaign County 4-H Federation and the proceeds will help pay for camp fees, travel opportunities and sports equipment for young people in Champaign County who otherwise couldn’t afford them.
The registration fee for the race increases on April 5. Here’s a link to the race form.

American Heart Association 5K
This race is on Saturday, April 13, at Nelson Park in Decatur. The deadline for online registration is April 9, but there is also race day registration.

Pounding the Pavement 5K/10K
These races are on Sunday, April 14, on the Illinois State University campus in Normal. The event is sponsored by the ISU chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

5K Run for Runaways
This race is on Sunday, April 14, at Tipton Park in Bloomington. It is sponsored by Illinois State University’s Red Tassel Mortar Board National Honor Society, and it benefits Project Oz, an organization that provides services to homeless and runaway youth. There’s a list of items needed by Project Oz on the race website. Donating an item will get you a free 50/50 raffle ticket.

Tulip 5K for a Cure
This race is on Sunday, April 14, at the White Oak Trail in Bloomington. Proceeds from the race will be donated toward finding a cure for pancreatic cancer. Click here for a copy of the race form.

I Run Chicago
This race is Sunday, April 14, at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Lincoln Park in Chicago. It’s a fundraiser for the UI’s I Fund, which provides scholarships and academic support services to UI athletes. The race includes 5K and 8K distances.

Run with a Mission
This is a 5K run/walk in Springfield on Saturday, April 13. There’s also a kids’ fun run. The race proceeds will go to help build a dormitory at Lake Springfield Christian Assembly.
