The Fit List

The Fit List

Good luck if you are running Lake Mingo or riding with the Ogden Lions Club this weekend. I’m headed to Chicago for a half marathon with some girlfriends. I’m looking forward to having fun with them and running in considerably cooler temperatures than at last year’s race.
Here’s the list of races for the next few weekends.

Weekend of June 8-9:
Lake Mingo Trail Run
This is a Kennekuk Road Runner race at Kennekuk Cove County Park on Saturday. It’s 7.1 miles on a hilly trail.

I haven’t done one of these races yet, but I know they’re very popular. This one is on Saturday in Springfield. You start the race with a clean white t-shirt and end it a big, colorful mess after you get “blazed” with different paint colors throughout the run.
This isn’t a timed race, but a fun run. The Color Blaze races all benefit a charity. The Springfield run benefits the Memorial Regional Burn Center.

Steamboat Classic
I really like this race, although it’s been a couple of years since I’ve done it. The races on Saturday, June 15, in Peoria include 15K and 4-mile races and a 4K fun run/walk. The 15K is hilly and the race organizers bill it as “Illinois’ Toughest 15K” (although I think the Mountain Goat 15K at Kickapoo State Park is tougher). They say the 4-mile course is the world’s fastest, as the world records for that distance have been set there (downhill finish!). The 4K fun run/walk is timed but non-competitive and is aimed at younger runners and those with disabilities.
There is no race day registration, and online registration closes June 8 at midnight.
