What an August! It’s great running weather — feels more like fall. Great weather for some PRs at the Mahomet half marathon this weekend.
Here’s your list of races:
Weekend of Aug. 17-18:
— Mahomet Half Marathon and 5K
These races are Saturday in Mahomet and they benefit the Mahomet Area Youth Club.
Online registration is closed, but you can register on race day. For more information, go to http://maycrace.home.mchsi.com/.
— Danvers Days 5K
This 5K race is Sunday in Danvers, in conjunction with the Danvers Days festival. Click here and you’ll find a link to the race registration form.
— Mt. Zion Pony Express 5K
This 5K race is Saturday in Mt. Zion. It’s part of the Pony Express Days festival. Click here to get to a page with the race registration form.
— Race to Remember
This is a 5K race and a 1-mile fun run on Saturday. The race is on the trails at Fox Ridge State Park in Charleston. Race proceeds go to the Alzheimer’s Association. Here’s a link for race info.
— Abe’s Amble
This 10K is Sunday at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. You can register online only this year. Here’s the link.
— Apple Dumpling 5K
This 5K run/walk is Saturday in Atwood. It is part of the Apple Dumpling festival, and race proceeds benefit the Atwood Everyday Needy Fund. Here’s a link to the race’s Facebook page. Click on the image at the top to get the registration form.
— Run for the Fallen
This event on Saturday is part of a series of national events to honor fallen soldiers. This event is at the Charleston High School Track, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants run or walk a mile for a soldier from Illinois who was killed in either Iraq or Afghanistan.
There is no fee to participate, but donations are being accepted for the Wounded Warrior Project.

— Tour de Paws
This bike ride is Saturday in Decatur. There are rides of 25, 43 and 61 miles, as well as a family fun ride. The rides benefit the Decatur & Macon County Animal Shelter Foundation and the Scovill Zoo. There’s a party afterward with family activities and canine demonstrations.

— Kiwanis Fun Day Bike Ride
These rides are Saturday at Rend Lake in southern Illinois. There are 12-, 30-, 60- and 100-mile rides, and also a team competition for most team members and most team miles ridden. For more information, go to fundaybikeride.com.
— Bike Psycho Century
These rides are on Sunday at Coal City. There are distances of 30, 50, 70, 100 and 124 miles along the Illinois River. For more information, click here for the ride website. Online registration is closed, but you can register on the ride day.
Weekend of Aug. 24-25:
— C-U Across the Prairie
This is Prairie Cycle Club’s annual ride, and it’s on Saturday, Aug. 24. I’ll FINALLY be able to do it this year for the first time! I’m looking forward to it. There is a 10-mile leisurely family ride, and routes of 29, 34 and 63 miles. The rides all depart from the pavilion at Crystal Lake in Urbana, and they coincide with the Urbana Sweet Corn Festival. — Staci’s Country Miles
This is a 5K race and 1K kids run on Saturday, Aug. 24, in Royal. Race proceeds will be donated to the Royal Fun Day. Here’s a link to the Facebook page for the race, and here’s a link for online registration.
— Kickapoo Fat Tire Festival
There are mountain biking events on Saturday, Aug. 24, and Sunday, Aug. 25, at Kickapoo State Park. There are various classes for the Sunday races, plus a free kids race. You can preregister online or register on race day. For more information, go to www.kickapoofattire.com.
— No Baloney Ride
This ride starts in Morton and includes routes of 25, 50, 75 and 100 miles. For more information, go to http://ivwnobaloney.com/.
— Habitat for Humanity of DeWitt County 5K Home Run
This 5K is Saturday, Aug. 24, in Clinton. It supports the Habitat for Humanity of DeWitt County. Click here for online registration.
Weekend of Aug. 31-Sept. 2:
— Rat Race
My hometown race. This race in Arthur on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, includes 5K and 10K runs, a 5K recreational walk, a 1-mile fun run and a kids fun run. Run this race and get your free cheese!

— Great Illini Triathlon
This triathlon is Saturday, Aug. 31, at Lake Mattoon Beach at Neoga. It includes a half-Ironman distance tri and an Olympic distance tri. Those of you (like me) who entered one of the events last year when the tris were canceled due to weather are automatically entered in the same distance event this year, according to the website.
The half-Ironman is a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a half marathon. The Olympic distance tri is a 1.5K swim, a 24.8-mile bike ride and a 10K run.

— Obstacle Mobstacle Dash
This event is on Sunday, Sept. 1, at Centennial Park in Champaign. It involves negotiating a 2-mile fitness challenge course with team members. The course includes obstacles and activities the teams must complete.

— Imagine No Malaria 5K
This 5K is Saturday, Aug. 31, at Crystal Lake Park in Urbana. It benefits a joint effort by Quest United Methodist Church and Savoy United Methodist Church to raise money for the Imagine No Malaria campaign to eradicate the disease.

— Illinois State Time Trial Championships
This is the first year the state time trial cycling championship has been held in Central Illinois. It will be Saturday, Aug. 31, on a course starting and ending at Unity West Elementary School in Tolono.
Here’s a link for online registration, which closes Aug. 28. USA Cycling license holders must pre-register. Only non-licensed riders can register on the day of the event.

— Zoo Run Run

— Overdose Awareness Day 5K
This is a 5K race on Saturday, Aug. 31, in Mt. Zion. It is in memory of Tyler Young, who died from an overdose. Here’s a link with more information.
Upcoming registration deadlines:
— Midnight Mayhem
This is a midnight trail run, approximately a 5K, at Jubilee State Park in Brimfield on Friday, Sept. 20. It’s the third in a series of three Midnight Mayhem runs, all in different parks. Participants are required to wear a headlamp.
