Tonight is the Illini Challenge cross county meet at the UI Arboretum. Several members of the CU Racing team will be running against the Illini teams. The women’s race starts at 6:30 p.m. and the men’s race at 7 p.m. Go out and cheer them on.
If you’re looking for a race during the holiday weekend, look no further. Here’s your list:
Weekend of Aug. 31-Sept. 2:
— Rat Race
My hometown race. This race in Arthur on Labor Day includes 5K and 10K runs, a 5K recreational walk, a 1-mile fun run and a kids fun run. Run this race and get your free cheese!

— Great Illini Triathlon
This triathlon is Saturday at Lake Mattoon Beach at Neoga. It includes a half-Ironman distance tri and an Olympic distance tri. Those of you (like me) who entered one of the events last year when the tris were canceled due to weather are automatically entered in the same distance event this year, according to the website.
The half-Ironman is a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a half marathon. The Olympic distance tri is a 1.5K swim, a 24.8-mile bike ride and a 10K run.
It could be pretty sticky, but at least there is no hurricane-related storm forecast for race weekend this year.

— Bridge to Bridge Run
This is a 4-mile race on Labor Day in Peoria. It crosses the Illinois River twice, over the Robert Michel Bridge and the Cedar Street Bridge. For more information, go to www.bridgetobridgerun.com.
— Imagine No Malaria 5K
This 5K is Saturday at Crystal Lake Park in Urbana. It benefits a joint effort by Quest United Methodist Church and Savoy United Methodist Church to raise money for the Imagine No Malaria campaign to eradicate the disease.

— Illinois State Time Trial Championships
This is the first year the state time trial cycling championship has been held in Central Illinois. It will be Saturday on a course starting and ending at Unity West Elementary School in Tolono.
Online registration has closed for USA Cycling license holders, who were required to pre-register. Non-licensed riders can register on the day of the event.

— Zoo Run Run
This is a 5K run on Saturday at Peoria Zoo in Glen Oak Park, Peoria. In addition to the 5K, there’s a 1/4-mile youth run. Click here to get to a page with a link to the race brochure.
— Overdose Awareness Day 5K
This is a 5K race on Saturday in Mt. Zion. It is in memory of Tyler Young, who died from an overdose. Here’s a link with more information.
Weekend of Sept. 7-8:
— Arcola Broom Corn Festival 5K and 10K
These races in Arcola are Saturday, Sept. 7. There’s also a 5K recreational walk. There’s chip timing for this race this year.

— Capitol City Century
This ride is in Springfield on Sunday, Sept. 8. It includes distance options of 12, 25, 40, 62 and 100 miles. There’s also a free, 8-mile Historic Ride on Saturday, Sept. 7, featuring many historical sites in Springfield.

— Mud Sweat and Gears
This is an off-road cycling race on Sunday, Sept. 8, at Comlara County Park near Hudson. It’s another in the Illinois Homegrown Race Series Championship. Here is information about the race series and here’s a link for registration.
— AshleyCan 5K, 10K and Half Marathon
These races in Bourbonnais benefit the AshleyCan Pediatric Cancer Foundation. The 5K and 10K races are Saturday, Sept. 7, and the half marathon is Sunday, Sept. 8.

— 9/11 Heroes Run
This is a 5K run and a 1-mile fun run/walk on Sunday, Sept. 8, in Bloomington. It honors those serving in the military and emergency services as first responders and supports veterans and their families.

— Top of the Hill 5K
This race is in Mount Pulaski on Saturday, Sept. 7. There’s also a kids dash.

— GiGi’s Playhouse 6K
This is a 6k run and walk in Kankakee on Saturday, Sept. 7. It’s a fundraiser for GiGi’s Playhouse, which provides therapuetic and educational programs to individuals with Down syndrome.

This race is Sunday, Sept. 8, in Glen Oak Park in Peoria. You can run the half marathon as an individual or as part of a two-person relay team.

Weekend of Sept. 14-15:
— Shoreline Classic
This race, and the following ride, make this weekend one of my favorite weekends in the fall. Shoreline is Sunday, Sept. 15, and includes 15K and 5K races and a tot trot. This year there is no race day registration for the 15K and 5K, and online registration closes Sept. 8, so get signed up.

— Bob Galloway Memorial Amish Country Bicycle Tour
I love this ride through the countryside around Arthur, where I grew up. The ride is Saturday, Sept. 14, and you can choose from routes of roughly 20, 42 or 60 miles.

— Evergreen Lake Ultras
This event includes three races on Sunday, Sept. 15, at Comlara County Park near Hudson. There’s the 44-mile Evergreen Lake Ultra and a Half (starting at 4:30 a.m.!!); the 32-mile Evergreen Lake Ultra; and the 16-mile Evergreen Lake Half Ultra.

— Masonic Charity Trail Run
This is a 4.25-mile noncompetitive fun run on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Homer Lake. The race benefits the Crisis Nursery. You can register online only until the morning of Sept. 4, but there is also race day registration.

— Fall Festival Race the Cross
This race includes a 10K, 5K and 1-mile fun run on Sunday, Sept. 15, in Mattoon. There are team awards, in addition to individual awards, for the 10K and 5K. The races are part of the Knights of Columbus Fall Festival.

— Clark-Lindsey 5K Run/Walk for Lifelong Wellness
This is a fun run/walk on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Clark-Lindsey Village in Urbana. The theme of the race is “superheroes” and awards will be given for the best superhero costumes.

— 2 Mile Tune-Up
You don’t see many (any?) 2-mile races. This one is in Lincoln on Saturday, Sept. 14. Here’s the registration site.
— Bloomington-Normal Race for the Cure
This 5K race is Saturday, Sept. 14, in Bloomington. It’s part of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure series to raise money for breast cancer education, screening and treatment. Here’s a link with more information on the event.
— AIDS Walk/Run for Life
This 5K is on Sunday, Sept. 15, in Bloomington. Here’s a link for more information and online registration.
— Good Shepherd Manor Fall Festival 5K Trail Run
This is a 5K run, a 1-mile fun run/walk and kids superhero races on Sunday, Sept. 15, at Good Shepherd Manor in Momence. The organization provides care to men with developmental disabilities.

— Pumpkin Classic
This race on Saturday, Sept. 14, is part of the Morton Pumpkin Festival. There’s a 10K race and a 2-mile walk/run. Here’s a link to the race website.
— Daycation Museum Bicycle Series Ride #3
This is the third and final ride of three museum bike rides sponsored by Champaign Cycle this summer. It’s on Saturday, Sept. 14, and it’s a ride to the Chanute Air Museum in Rantoul. Riders will get a map with suggested stopping points and options for making the rides longer. The ride is a self-guided tour, with riders going at their own paces. There’s no charge for the ride, but riders must pay the admission fee to the air museum.

— Farmdale Festival
These downhill and cross country mountain bike races are Saturday, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept. 22, at Farmdale Recreation Area in Washington. They are also part of the Illinois Homegrown Race Series Championship. Here is information about the race series and here’s a link for registration.
Upcoming registration deadlines:
— Midnight Mayhem
This is a midnight trail run, approximately a 5K, at Jubilee State Park in Brimfield on Friday, Sept. 20. It’s the third in a series of three Midnight Mayhem runs, all in different parks. Participants are required to wear a headlamp.
