The Fit List

The Fit List

I’m sure it’s not a surprise that I think the appropriate way to end one year and start another one is with a run. Here are some races/runs coming up on New Year’s Eve and on New Year’s Day, and in early January.
Happy New Year!

Weekend of Dec. 28-29:
First Night 5K
This is a family-friendly 5K run/walk on Sunday at Scheel’s in Springfield. The event includes entertainment and kids’ activities.

New Year’s Eve, Tuesday, Dec. 31:
Body n Sole
Body n’ Sole Sports in Savoy will host its annual New Year’s Eve fun run, to benefit the Eastern Illinois Food Bank. The 3-mile run is at 4 p.m. and entry is $15 to the Food Bank. The run is limited to 150 participants, and registration closes Sunday. You get a tech shirt for your entry fee, and there are door prizes and snacks at the store following the run. Here’s a link to the store’s page about the event.

Neoga Frozen 5K

Weekend of Jan. 4-5:
Siberian Express
This is a great 7.45-mile trail run at Kickapoo State Recreation Area, always on the first Saturday in January — and it always happens, no matter what the weather. It’s Saturday, Jan. 4, this year, followed by a party in Danville. Here’s the race form, and here’s the link for online registration.

Weekend of Jan. 11-12:
Illinois Fat Ass 50
This run on Sunday, Jan. 12, is a 50K at McNabb. The run is on a 10-mile out-and-back course. Run as much or as little as you’d like. There’s no entry fee, and the run celebrates the 50th wedding anniversary of a couple of runners.
Here’s a link for more information.

Polar Bear Dare
This is a 10K and 5K race and a 1-mile fun run on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Mill Creek Park near Marshall. The race is a fundraiser for the Clark County Park District Trails Coalition.

Upcoming registration deadlines:
Clinton Lake Ultra
This race is three loops of a 10-mile trail at the Clinton Lake State Recreation Area on Saturday, March 29, 2014. The wooded trail is mostly single-track and hilly. Registration is open now through March 1, but the race usually fills before that. Here’s a link for registration.
